Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

I hadn't seen this! Thanks for sharing!

Got the neck and torpedo launcher of the Refit exterior modeled yesterday, but unfortunately no new screenshots yet. I'm pleased to note that I'm taking steps to rig it for emergency saucer separation. If all goes well, I should have the entire exterior modeled by next week. And then I can begin my favorite part: texturing!
You're a sick man. But I'm glad you share.

That looks very nice. Will you cut the windows as well? O are you using a transparency map for those?

The windows I'll be handling with decals (which are driven by opacity masks) that have depth and emissive to them, much like I did with my TOS Enterprise, to good effect:

With the exception of the rec deck, botanical section, and VIP lounge windows, that is. This method will save a ton of polygons and will also reduce the time it takes for me to model.

Ah, gotcha. I thought the plan was to see your interiors from outside, but, now that I think about it, would make for a heavy load in Unreal. That's a nice idea though, making windows as decals. I'll have to try that on a mid resolution model one of these days :)

For the rec deck, botanical section, and VIP lounge, I do want to try and see the interiors from the outside. We'll see how feasible that is. At the very least, I'll have lower-poly versions of those sets visible through the windows. But for the smaller portholes, I don't think it's very necessary.

But, I do want a nice game-res model of the Refit Enterprise hull visible through the interior sets' windows, which is mainly why I'm building her and keeping her mid-poly.

Outer landing bay doors. As with the other windows on the ship, the landing bay control room windows are not modeled here, but will be employed with decals later in the process. I will be building a more detailed version of this aft section when it comes to modeling the actual landing bay/hangar/cargo complex at a later date, complete with working doors. This more detailed version of the landing bay exterior will have those windows modeled.

The idea is that this lower-res version of the landing bay doors is meant to be seen from a distance, and will swap out with the higher-res version upon getting closer to the landing bay.

I remember the die-cast TOS Enterprise they put out for the 25th anniversary, with the slide-out shuttlebay (with miniature shuttle) and the removable saucer dome that showed the bridge.

Looking good! I'm curious, if this were a professional work, how much time would they expect you to complete a model like this? You're pretty fast, but presumably you're doing this in your spare time, so I can't imagine if you were devoting working hours to it how much faster than that you'd be!

My schedule on weekdays is to work on this for about 4 hours every night after work, and on weekends lately I've been leaving them clear so I can pull all day marathon sessions (which, I must admit, I love). Just so you don't think I'm crazy, I do carve out some time for chores, rest, TV, friends, exercise, eating out,, etc as needed (although I've been slacking on the exercise). So, adding that up, I'm probably pulling close to 35-40 hours a week of work on this project if I don't have anything else planned for my weekends. Therefore, it's safe to say it would take the same amount of time if this were a professional job.

You...you all think I'm crazy, don't you? ;)
