Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

Thoughts on the rec deck. Are we sure that it HAS to go on the rim of the saucer. Because honestly until now I never realized there were windows on he back wall at all. As I look at screencaps you can barely make out what's outside of the windows anyway. Why not move the rec deck into the bulk of the saucer where the turbo shafts make sens? Then put an additional room beyond the windows that has a ceiling that vaguely resemble the dry dock ceiling and some sort of diagonal support structure on the left.

I thought that lounge where Kirk and McCoy talk to Spock was supposed to be back where those rectangular windows are on the model.

Yes.

Edit: There are external and internal details that tie that space to where it is, as well as the original intent.

IMHO. (Well, the what isn't an opinion, but the why is.)

I'm not disagreeing that those details exist. But it took me over twenty years to realize that there are barely visible details that kinda sorta look like what's outside the ship. In my mind that just means that while the intent may have been to put it there. There's some wiggle room since what's visible on the other side of the windows isn't that clear. I always thought that the rec deck was in the center rear of the primary hull and the two turbo shafts were more like the shafts that came down from the bridge.

Don't forget that Decker and Illia get right up to those windows for the "Memory Patterns" sequence of TMP:

Nah, I plan on modeling the interior of the rec deck as it was seen on-screen and where it was intended to be by the production staff. I'm sure I'll have all sorts of problems to solve when I get about it, and will do my best to make it believable, even if it doesn't fit completely within an exterior model, given that my prime directive is to create screen-accurate interiors of those sets seen on-screen. There's a balance to find, for sure, and I'll endeavor to do so. But I have no intention of moving the rec deck from where it's obviously meant to be according to the film, production documents, and consumer-facing schematics.

I won't get to the rec deck for a while, but like I said before, I intend on implying that those turbolift shafts are self-containted shafts just servicing those two levels of the rec deck. Or that they are only two levels tall and simply connected to the rest of the ship's turbolift network horizontally from behind the rec deck's walls.

Nice!

One thing no one ever models because, I think, perhaps the details were painted on instead of actually modeled? is how the maneuvering thruster openings are supposed to be shaped inside. Each thruster emplacement on the saucer has three openings, of course, and each one fires in a different direction. Take the one on the forward port side top edge. The circular opening fires up, and of the two rectangular openings one fire forward and the other to port. All the openings point towards a common center (in my example, directly below the circular opening.

There's this old Probert sketch (link) which shows in which direction each thruster nozzle fires on the bulk of the ship (not including the saucer).

You can infer from those in which directions the interior walls of each thruster "throat" would point, if one modeled such a thing. I should ask Andy if they were supposed to actually be openings or if they were "meshed" over.
Here are up-close shots of the maneuvering thrusters. They are obviously not just painted details and the thursters ports are actually extruded into the model. However, it's difficult to say whether or not they are extruded in a directional way as Probert's sketch suggests. It makes sense, and I'll consider modeling them in such a way for my model. I was just planning on "painting-on" those details through my texture (albeit with height and normal information to suggest they are modeled) but I'll see about modeling them into my final model.

Donny,
Been reading through the thread and had a couple comments. First, doesn't the bottom of the bridge's perimeter floor plate in TMP have a wider silver rim than the top? It's more equal in TWOK, like you have it.

Also, there was a lot of discussion about the restructuring of the bridge to make it into the Grissom and Saratoga and I expected someone to note some images that are out there of the sets, but I didn't see anyone do so, and they don't seem to be in your photostream either. Here's an old post of mine, but the links are still active: https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/the-saratoga-etc-bridge-sets.230692/page-2#post-11514146

Yes, you're right. It looks as if there is an additional silver rim that is connected from the bottom. I actually noted this early on in my bridge construction and meant to eventually model it, but I admit it's one of those details that fell through the cracks. I'll whip it up sometime soon, as it's a simple piece and won't take long to correct.

I've seen those Saratoga shots. I believe those are from Lora Johnson's photos she took of the sets when she was doing research for MSGTTE. They don't really confirm anything we didn't already know. We know that the Grissom/Saratoga bridge was a simple redress of the Enterprise bridge, just the captain's chair/helm turned almost 180 degrees and moved closer to the walls, the latter detail implying that it's a smaller bridge, which is why many fans and myself chose to depict the bridge as elliptical, and thus smaller.

Ah, there it is. I missed those shots in my look through of the screen caps.

Interestingly, you can see the V'GER interior in the SD screencaps, but it's black in the HD screencaps.
The SD screen cap is from the Director’s Cut, in which they digitally put a view of V’ger out the window. The HD screen cap is from the theatrical version in which there is nothing out the window, which was probably because they didn’t have time to finish the vfx for that shot.

Well, there was some question about the height of the helm, and I think this shows that it's not sitting on the same level as the perimeter station.

I'm not completely sure, as the pictures are small, but I'm seeing that the platform the helm sits on has been lifted up perhaps. The helm is definitely higher than it is in its normal TMP or TWOK height. Maybe it wasn't flush with the perimeter stations, but it's definitely close, no?

Especially noticeable in that last image: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-5-STAR...053241?hash=item35ddb77039:g:RfkAAOSwDk5UKMSD

Well, if you watch the scene on the Saratoga the captain steps down from the perimeter, walks in front of the helm, circles, then steps up again. Looking at the helm the top front edge of it looks to be lower than the top edge of the science console, and the helm has a lip. I suspect is IS lower, but by how much...

Ah well. If I ever do a Saratoga bridge, I'll be sure to lover the helm a bit. But my Grissom bridge stands for now.

Count me in the camp that would prefer a Rec Deck on the centreline of the ship, but then again this is not my project! ;)
The solution for the 8 "windows" on the Rec Deck is that they are hi-def viewing screens such as we saw behind Kirk, Spock and McCoy in the debriefing scene just after Spock came on board. I'd even go so far as to say that the debriefing room could be situation on the aft starboard area of the saucer and that its 2 viewscreen are in fact windows!
However, you have already accounted for that room as being in the Officer's Lounge so...I'll be in the corner again
Donny, you probably have this picture (link) of the Rec Deck under construction, but what's notable about it is how you can see part of the set that you can't see clearly once the side walls were finished, the shape of the vertical posts, and shape and depth of the side exits.
That's a treasure trove of details! Where did you find this pic?

I've not see that before, cool.

Do the lights with the shepherd's crook neck have a specific name? I see them a lot, but don't know what to call them.

I hadn't seen this! Thanks for sharing!

Got the neck and torpedo launcher of the Refit exterior modeled yesterday, but unfortunately no new screenshots yet. I'm pleased to note that I'm taking steps to rig it for emergency saucer separation. If all goes well, I should have the entire exterior modeled by next week. And then I can begin my favorite part: texturing!
