Donny's Non-Trek Stuff

I haven't done any research, so this is just me tossing an idea into the void, but how close were the mass produced model kits? Could you use those for detailing or were they way off?

My wonder is if there is someplace like the RPF where someone has a catalog of the exact model kits used to kitbash the original.

I've actually been supplementing my filming miniature reference with images of the Bandai model kit, which seems to be more or less screen-accurate. However, some of those finer details escape the camera's focus or clarity.

That is simultaneously so cool and so disappointing.
Right?? I’ve been looking at shots of it for weeks, under the impression it was a full size set, dreaming of the day I could visit this Sci-Fi Airshow. It wasn’t until this morning I discovered it was a miniature!

"....with a 19% cut in salary, backdated to the beginning of time."

I love that man's accent. When I read the first Harry Potter novel before the first film came out, it was his voice I heard as Dumbledore.

For large set pieces, look at some of the plastic reefer unit covers of any junked trailers.

The plastic behind some car parts—or certain plastic pallets can be cut apart for interesting shapes

Finished the body of the TIE Advanced x1. Now just to detail and texture the solar panels.

Here's a rare view of a "wingless" x1 so you can see how the ship looks without the solar panels in the way. There's a lack of schematics of the body without the wings so this may be useful to some.

Discovery would be a great project. Gorgeous, iconic, and lots of clear images from 2001 to work from.

I'll add my encouragement to binge-watch Babylon 5 this summer, too, Donny! Not just great ship designs to geek out on, but a very good storyline with a cohesive four-season arc that has some great payoffs. (Grit your teeth through the first few episodes when the actors and production staff are settling in--it's clear sailing after that.)

And my two cents is to see the Versiga Magic™ worked on the Cygnus. Always had a soft spot for that beast, and I'd love to see it rendered without the 'cheat' of frosted glass.

Very cool to have that full view of the x1 hull, but I still think it's just too big a target for its role. I prefer the v1 version myself. :)
