Donny’s Late TOS Movie Era Interiors

@Donny thanks for the background on the TVH bridge. Learn something new even after all this time. I wonder what I'll forget in order to make room for it on my overstuffed wetware.

Actually, a strut wouldn’t fit between those two stations due to the consoles jutting out pretty far, a problem I’ve been aware of and not sure how I’ll solve. None of the other segments had that problem because the consoles weren’t as near the edges as those two.

Obviously, if I leave that strut out it will be set-accurate, but it will look very odd with one missing there when all the rest of the segment borders have a strut.

Could you omit a strut on the opposite side of the bridge to keep it somewhat symmetrical?

I don't know if it was just down to the lighting, or a deliberate design choice, but early on the screens are a mixture of blue & green, but once they reach Sha Ka Ree they look like they change and become a sort of flat pale cyan colour:

It just seems a bit odd!

Perhaps they suffered changes in hue due to post-production color correction. Those were old CRT monitors - they may have been keyed in at different color temperatures and they just didn't have the time to adjust them all to be consistent.

I discussed this up thread somewhere. In the TFF commentary, Mike Okuda explains that they changed the displays after the Enterprise traveled beyond the barrier to be a washed out color to indicate that The Barrier/proximity to “God” was affecting ships systems. Not the best move as it’s a bit confusing, but I assume it was something Mr. Shatner wanted.

Well that would explain it - very cool!

Thanks :D Between work, my projects, and gym time I apparently can’t be bothered searching through my own thread to find stuff I’ve said before
I didn't realize we'd blitzed through another 12 pages in this thread in only a month. I should have just done a search, but instead I just kept paging back, paging back...

Yes, I could one day do a Saratoga bridge depiction, but that's outside the scope of this thread, since it's in the design of the TMP-TVH bridges, not TFF and TUC. My current motivation lies within the confines of the fifth, sixth, and the beginning of the seventh movie, and I doubt I'll be venturing back to the early TOS movie aesthetic any time soon.

I came to the conclusion when I was doing the Grissom bridge that the set was most likely standing that way between III and IV. Instead of putting it back the way it was at "default", they just decided to use the Grissom layout for the Saratoga layout. Indeed, all the stations are in the same place relative to the captain's chair, they just upgraded some of the bridge displays that were in frame. It wasn't until the end of IV that they put the bridge back to default, painted it white, and Mike Okuda did his work re-inventing the control schemes.

They redid the entire bridge. There's a shot of Gene and Majel sitting at the science station of the Ent-A bridge at the end of TVH which shows that the science staiton and station directly next to it were redone (both were visible in the Saratoga scenes). One can only assume that the entire bridge was redone, and I know that Okuda designed displays for the entire bridge.

Anyway, not to digress from the focus of this thread, but I will one day in the near future generate the TVH Ent-A bridge, as I have come across references which will allow me to generate the display graphics as they were on set, even the ones we never saw ;) Dunno when I'll get around to it, but I'm no longer blocked from tackling it by lack of info
Donny, I can hardly wait to see that version of the Bridge set, it was so brief and bright. I was wondering if a combination of Okudagrams from IV and V would work on your rendition; the Enterprise was going through a transition during TVH and TFF?

I now have reference for all the bridge station displays for the TVH bridge, so there will no need to mix and match. Besides, while they are similar, the style of the TVH displays are distinct in many ways from their TFF counterparts. When I do get around to the TVH bridge, I'll be sticking with what I know was there.

Also, people of this thread. I'm having trouble deciding which of my two TOS movie era threads to keep discussion of the TVH Ent-A bridge located. Obviously, TVH would be considered a "later" TOS movie and is of the Enterprise-A, so it does make sense to discuss it here. However, because it's still of the style of the early TOS movies in terms of it's geometry, the artist in me wants me to keep discussion of it over at my Refit thread. When I originally renamed the thread "Late TOS movie era..." I was thinking of TOS movie interiors/props/ships that took place after TNG had debuted and Herman Zimmerman took charge of production design of the films, as the visual split between the first four movies and the later two + GEN is very apparent.

Haha. I know this isn't that big of a deal. Just wondering what everyone else's thoughts were. I'm happy to discuss the TVH Ent-A here if it's easier for everyone, and since this is currently the more active thread.

All this *and* the gym? If you get any better then actual worship will be called for lmao

dJE
Oh yes. Back in June I rededicated myself to fitness after a long slog of ignoring that aspect of life. I'm now in the gym for an hour 6 days a week, with hour-long 3.5-mile walks every evening. Gotta stay in shape for service in Starfleet! (and, more importantly, for my mental and physical health!)

I'd lean toward keeping discussion of the TVH bridge in the other thread. The only thing connecting it to this thread is the Okudagrams; as you point out, the Mike Minor/Joe Jennings/Hal Michelson aesthetic is very different from Herman Zimmerman's.

Maybe you could ask Administration to combine your threads? It would save you the trouble to choose but I think both thread has its purpose and darn it - they're both - fun*.

*Your TOS thread is my fav but I do understand it wipes you out at times. I was wondering if you had an itch to modify some aspects of the bridge like putting your interpretation of what TAS bridge of the Enterprise could look like in a 3D realm?

No, I like keeping my threads separate. I intentionally start new threads for each era I focus on.

And I’m definitely burned out on TOS (the series) modeling for a long time. I will return when the mood strikes again, as I’m sure it will. But odds of that happening anytime soon are slim. From a modeling/texturing standpoint, it’s just not as satisfying and challenging, tbh.

I don't really mind which thread the TVH bridge should go in, although again from aesthetic sense and design, it would make more sense for it being discussed in the other thread. That being said, I wonder if you'll jump on it sooner due to popular demand.
