Done with Star Trek?

I'm sure there are a few around here who will assert that I've been done with Star Trek for decades. Well that's not quite accurate.

I held in for a long time. Firstly through the dry years of the '70s when Star Trek was kept alive by enormous success in syndicated reruns and significant fan interest as well as a smattering of occasional merchandise. Many folks like to call TOS a failure, but that is by a very narrow definition because in the long run TOS was incredibly successful such that it launched a huge franchise.

Although I had my quibbles along the way any real dissatisfaction with Trek really started to take hold for me in the mid '90s when TNG was in its final years, DS9 got going and VOY came along. That and the TNG movies. That and the exposure to other SF in television and literature helped give focus to things I was disappointed with and get an idea of where I felt it started to go astray (for my liking).

To say I'm done with Star Trek needs to be qualified. I will always love TOS (missteps and all) as well as some of the films and elements of TNG. To that end I will still collect stuff related to those parts of Star Trek that I appreciate. I will continue to pursue personal little projects also related to those.

For a long time I couldn't imagine turning sour on Trek, but I'm really done with the franchise as a whole. It hasn't interested me in any positive way for years. And assuming that Abrams' film is the new face of Trek then that is the final nail in the coffin until/unless it is ever revived into something bearing at least a passing resemblance to what it once was and what I loved about it. I won't elaborate any further on this point because I'm sure someone would take personal offense over it.

I could well be a lone voice here or perhaps there might be a handful of like minded souls lurking about. If it sounds like sour grapes then so be it. The franchise has gone in a direction I don't care for and don't respect. For those for whom it works, have fun.

I'm thankful there's other SF to enjoy out there.

Folks who are "done with Star Trek" would be pretty unlikely to post in topics concerning it, much less start one.

It's sort of like starting threads asking to have one's account deleted, accomplishing nothing other than getting a little attention for no good reason.

This.

I've always been interested in Trek - yes even TOS despite what my signature says :p. But I have to admit that with the way Abrams has taken the franchise, I'm very skeptical about it's future. I loved TOS-TNG-DS9. I even love VOY and ENT. I'll continue to love that part of the franchise, probably until the day I die.

As far as I'm concerned, however, the Abrams-verse is not to my liking, at all. That's why I have nothing to do with it. I avoid the Trek XI forum (it doesn't help that the few times I've posted my thoughts in there I've been met with a howling windstorm of criticism - some bordering on outrage that I would dare dislike the movie). I'll continue to live in hope that the future movies will return the franchise to what I liked and will continue to see them in the theatre, but until then I'm forced to retain a rather pessimistic view.

FYI - this isn't the first time he's posted something to this effect either. He'll be back.

Not me. I've had an unhealthy obsession with Star Trek since I was a kid. I don't see that changing any time soon.

There are aspects of the franchise that I don't care for, but I typically just ignore them.

(For example, a quick search for posts by me in the Voyager forum yielded the following results: Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms. And I don't even hate that show, it's just my least fav. ;))

I find that I stay happier if I focus my energy on things that I do enjoy.

Can I have all your Star Trek DVDs and/or merchandise?
Reread my initial post. If it's TOS related I'm keeping it.

But case in point: I picked up a book, Children of Kings, and I sat down to start reading. I happened to read the author's note in the back first out of curiosity. The author states that the book is supposed to be a prequel to the Abrams' film. Soon as I read that I had the impulse to throw the thing away and donate it to the library.

Out of curiosity I read the first couple of pages. Hmm, it didn't read like a prequel because all the Cage era supporting characters were there which were definately not in the film. Alas, there was some reference to ENT's version of the 22nd century. Still, I'll give it a go to see how it unfolds, but in the future I sure as hell won't be interested in anything that ties into the Abramsverse.

I could have posted the Picard one, but I don't have it uploaded and I'm too lazy to do it right now.

No worries, I don't actually want your DVDs and/or merchandise. It was just a variation on the expression "Can I have your stuff?" that is often used when frustrated MMO gamers post that they are fed up with the game and are quitting, as is common on forums for that type of game. This is the first time I have seen such a post on the Trek forums, though, so I couldn't resist ;)

Nominated for Post Of The Week.

The existence of this thread is a good example of the phenomenon of self-dramatization.

Well, I for one would really miss Warped9 if he didn't post here anymore. I apreciate the hard work and deep thought he put into his shuttle plans as well as the other artwork and photoshop stuff he's done.

While I don't consider myself a TOS purist, TOS is my favorite trek, and while I don't hate modern or "post-modern" ;) trek, with the exception of a few ep's and movies, I can certainly do without it, Not so TOS!.

Yes, sometimes he gets a little carried away in poo-pooing newer stuff, but that just betrays his love of the original, passion is the spice of life, as they say!

So what say we give o' Warpy a break and lend a sympethetic ear as it were. he just wants the right to discuss how he feels, and he deserves to be heard just like the rest of us. Whateever happened to IDIC?

Remember, if it wasn't for TOS there wouldn't be a any trek, or trek forums, at all. What a sad world that would be.:(

I'm one to give him a break..

he, like myself, likes PARTS of it, but here's the rub... I never went around taking every single opportunity to bash those parts of Trek fandom I don't like..and the fans of those parts I don't like..

In every Star Trek incarnation, there are fans who like the new thing..and those who don't...

And my opinion isn't the right one for every single fan...

Star Trek's a BIG Tent...there's room for opinions other than my own ...

And most folks accept that..after all, TOS still exists on DVD and Blue-Ray..And I really have no desire to own much more Star Trek stuff than I have already...

and the Blue Ray includes BOTH special effects suites..

So..there's nothing to lament..

It will last for a LONG time..

As to the Abrams Trek... I like it more for the NEW fans that it will add to the legions of Star Trek fans and the new life it brought to a tired look and feel..(there's some crap there I didn't like but I'm willing to forgive some sins..and move on beyond them and enjoy the film for the thrill ride it was ) and those new fans are VERY busy exploring the many facets of Trek fandom INCLUDING TOS..ensuring a longer life for the franchise...

And that's a good thing? right?

My interest in anything will not stay at the same exact level for years on end. Star Trek or not. I have zero interest in shows I was crazy about a mere four years ago.

With anything that runs for years, a certain amount of turnover is to be expected; to say nothing about decades. Naturally not every producer or director is going to have the same idea about the direction to take things, and not all of it is going to be "my cup of tea".

That's just the way it is.

In regards to the old stuff -- of any franchise -- I can only revisit it so many times and only so often. There is such a thing as one too many trips to the well. I have all of TOS on DVD. How often do I watch it? Not very. Have I even re-watched all the episodes since I bought them? Not even close.
