Done with Star Trek?

I used to love TNG - and of course I was highly motivated to like it - and more recently have admired it but had no particular interest in watching it. I started catching the occasional episode on WGN recently and I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

as a kid who grew up watching star trek on nbc i was into star trek, science fiction and well a lot of other stuff too.
and along the way i was open to new trek and other new things.
i found something to like in each of the trek series though some more then others.

as for the new movie i went once with some friends about my age or older.
we all saw the original run of trek.
the move was meet with a lot of approval with it made them feel young as one of the comments made.

It's already that time of the year again, when Warped9 laments what became of Star Trek and implies that he's done with it?

If the past serves as any example, it's doubtful you're "done with Star Trek". I guess you just need some people to publicly tell you how much you're appreciated. ;)

Obama sucks spock!!!

Hmmm. Somehow, this does not surprise me. Someone's been busy all evening.

As far as Warped9's decision to be "done with Star Trek," I have to admit that I myself had to force myself away from this location for a self-imposed exile. I think he's entitled to explain himself since when folks disappear, other folks just make up crap about them.

I, however, will not miss him, even though I suspect he and I have far more in common than he would realize. I focus exclusively on the original series. I still watch the episodes and the movies (evil secret: I love Star Trek V).

I used to watch all Modern Trek, but frankly, Berman and Braga ruined it for me, and I've decided not to even bother with it except for, as Dennis points out that he does, the occasional re-run of an episode on WGN, WFXL, and any number of cable channels still running it. But I don't begrudge folks from loving nuTrek, VOY, DS9 or even ENT. Well, okay, maybe I begrudge them some for ENT.

I can't tell you the number of times that I've been put off by Warped9's bashing of Modern Trek. It's as though he'd show in the thread and deliberately pee in the pool, so to speak. Well, I can only take so much of that, and I ended up simply leaving threads when he showed up. It became comical almost, in a tragic sort of sense.

But, I'm wishing you the best, Ray, and I hope that you find whatever the hell you're looking for. Maybe you should try to create Star Trek in the mold you would have Modern Trek cast. I myself decided to create a Star Trek fan film series with more of a focus on science fiction. I know that you've written some post-TMP fan fiction; perhaps you should devote a website to that.

I did as well. Once season 3 got under way, I started watching it regularly and looked forward to it. Season 6 started the downward slide though... I could tell the time was near.

Anyway, I've not been able to rejuvenate my interest in TNG. I'll never own the DVD set beyond just a couple of DVD's I picked up because of certain episodes that interested me. I thought the production values for Deep Space 9, Voyager and Enterprise were better. DS9 is too soap-opera like for my taste... at least it was until the Dominion came into play and we saw some of the best large scale battles every shown on Star Trek. Voyager struggled for an identity... there were some great episodes and Richard Picardo's representation of the Doctor was superb. I watched more of it than DS9. Then there's Enterprise, which absolutely sucked in seasons 1&2, but started hitting its stride in season 3. It was so sad to see it canceled before its prime.

Anyway, I still enjoying watching a TOS episode from time to time. I'll never be done with Star Trek. Yet, without any new material, I'll only be watching it once in a while when the mood strikes me. Kind of like "The Beatles" music. Great stuff, but not something you can listen to every day. :)

My interest in anything will not stay at the same exact level for years on end. Star Trek or not. I have zero interest in shows I was crazy about a mere four years ago.

With anything that runs for years, a certain amount of turnover is to be expected; to say nothing about decades. Naturally not every producer or director is going to have the same idea about the direction to take things, and not all of it is going to be "my cup of tea".

That's just the way it is.

In regards to the old stuff -- of any franchise -- I can only revisit it so many times and only so often. There is such a thing as one too many trips to the well. I have all of TOS on DVD. How often do I watch it? Not very. Have I even re-watched all the episodes since I bought them? Not even close.
True enough. I've got pretty much all I want on DVD and I revisit once in awhile, but I can't live in it like I used to. I still love it, but other things have come along to fill the void contemporary Trek hasn't been able to satisfy for me.

As for discussing 'Trek: nah, I can talk about 'Trek-- well except Voyager and Enterprise-- for a while longer. Though I'm not a serious about it as I once was, and really have no interest in the hardliner convos these days. I'll also admit I'm far more picky about what I pick up in the novels or the comics. Basically I'm not spending as much money or time on the tie-in stuff these days.

I've lost faith in SyFy. AMC has some promise. They were considering an adaptation of Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars series at one point but I don't know about now.

I doubt I'll ever be "done" with Star Trek. I'm definitely done with JJTrek, but the mainline continuity, I'll keep going with that, and not just because of the Concordance gig.

For one thing, Star Trek is, like in the 70's, going back to the purview of the fans, and with the current studio infatuation with JJ & his merry band of hacks, it'll probably be ours for the foreseeable future. So, I say let's make the most of it.

Discounting what Abrams is doing, what else are we going to see from the Star Trek franchise? Doubtful another series will come up again anytime soon... in fact, not for a very long time. And the "classic" Star Trek movies are done... actors are off doing other things.

I guess we'll just have to wait. Or... maybe the fan fiction work will gain traction. "New Voyages" has improved a bit. James Cawley isn't as stiff as he was in the beginning, but he's no professional actor. Sometimes there are scenes where he's just painfully bad. The directors are also not mainstream material. You can just tell by what they get out of the actors. Maybe they'll be some kind of backing to take place and allow for an increased budget for higher quality acting. But... this has been Cawley's baby and I seriously doubt if he'll step down as Captain. There's also the matter of scene timing. "New Voyages" has scenes that drag on way too long. And they seriously overplay some story arcs, like in "Blood and Fire"... horribly off balance and distasteful in some respects with how they handled the gay relationship.

Anyway, fan fiction movies seems to be all that's left for new material. It does have potential... though too limited in terms of production quantity.

Back in the '70s a lot of us felt Star Trek didn't get the respect we felt it deserved. And back then we had little notion of what over saturation could be like. Yet even so it was a great time to be a Trek fan. We treasured just about every little thing that came our way.

Despite my personal reservations even the advent of TNG didn't ruin that feeling. Star Trek was head-and-shoulders above anything else that was out there, but IMO that argument can't be made anymore.

^^

"People can be very frightened of change."-Capt. James Tiberius Kirk
 You really want me to get started?

Change isn't something to be afraid of. But it can be very disheartening when you see something you like going into the crapper. And do I really have to add "in my opinion?"

I have never liked all of Star Trek.I am a huge fan of TOS, TNG and all of their movies. Although I like Voyager it is a bit of hit an miss for me. Enterprise had its good moments but I don't go out of my way to watch it. DS9 is something I avoid and ignore.

I absolutely loved the new movie and I am excited about the direction Star Trek is going.

So I will never be done with Trek. But my main point is, if I have a passion about something and even if that passion should wane I know there is the possibility of it being rekindled should something new and exciting come along. So I suspect the OP really isn't done with Trek, his passion may just be lying dormant and I am sure he will at least keep an eye out for each future Trek project that comes along just in case there might be a future Trek project that may reawaken his passion.

In other words, never say never...we can't close our mind to the future because who knows what the future may bring?

For Me:

TOS-Grew up with it in the early late 70s/early 80s; but certain things are dated, which have been changed in the new film. Still, my fave of the series.

TNG-Hit or miss; not as adventurous as TOS and could get very boring and slow.

DS9-Cool; and recaptures somewhat the adventure of TOS.

VOY-Hit or miss; usually miss.

ENT-Hit or miss, but some episodes are really good.

TOS films-I'm not as enthused as I used to be; the Abrams film has something to do with that.

TNG films-The less said the better...especially with the unfortunate Insurrection.

nuTOS-Fantastic....
