Doing a Daedalus Class Variant :)

Oh don't worry, they will be blue, though I'm sure most will scream about it hahahaha

either way, I was hoping to have an animation to show off this afternoon, but for some reason the lens flare i was using as a sun keeps flickering up and down, but there is nothing keyframed in, and nothing in the track view (3ds max) about it. I can't figure out why it's doing it, so until I do, no animation haha

wow it's a blast from the past
good to see you're still around makin' art :techman:

ship looks great so far!

Looking good. Nice take on the Daedalus. Keep up the great work and will be looking foreward to more.:techman:

Make sure you don't have the J.J. Abrams setting on. There's three settings 1) Off 2) Lens Flare 3) Camera shake

:rommie:

alrighty! Still no progress on my lens flare problem, so ive tabled it for the day and decided to keep working... progress? Windows!!

and something a bit more heroic.

You could also do a version of this without the secondary hull at all and it would still look balanced!

Hope the nacelles aren't too blue for everyone ;)

Don't take this as a criticism because it's not. I like what you're doing. But as I look at this I keep envisioning a different primary hull other than a sphere. Not a saucer in the familiar sense, but more like a sphere with the top and bottom quarters or thirds removed.

Kinda like this:

__________XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
_____XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
___XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
__XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
____XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
________XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Very good so far. However, the connecting section between the primary and secondary hull is still rather impossibly thin (but always been the case on any design variant of this class I've seen).

Enlarging the neck effects a surprising amount of change to the aesthetics of the design (as I discovered when working on a version of the Daedalus). Unfortunately, aesthetics seem to be the Daedalus design's Achilles' heel. From several angles (mostly those that favor the side), the ship looks impressive, but from many angles - particularly those off-center front angles most associated with Star Trek - the sphere blocks most of the rest of the ship from view, and hinders the necessary sense of movement. (The "cobra" shots of the Enterprise, in which the saucer sweeps over the field of view are difficult, if not impossible, with the Daedalus design.) I always liked the shape of the ship, but I can see why Jefferies ultimately abandoned the spherical hull concept.

Firstly the progress is really good. Yes the narrow connecting neck is narrow but I don't see how you can change that without upsettign the whole thing. Regardless I like it and the video rocks

you might be able to get away with a supporting structure on the bottom side of the neck, a nice curve up from the deflector area to the base of the sphere.
