Does Simon Pegg do an accurate Scottish accent?

That Sub Rosa episode was hilariously bad. Quadruple facepalm.

That was a little treasure of an episode where you have to commend the actors for not bursting out laughing.

It is always good, that after 7 years, they still found a way to challenge the actors ;)

As for the accent, its about as convincing as Doohan's, in that it sounds kind of Scottish. It works well enough, I guess.

I'm sure there are more authentic accents out there, but it might just a more "evolved" accent ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Pegg's wife (who, as was just said, actually is Scottish) actually HELP him with creating his Scotty accent?

That was what I had heard, as well as the first assistant director, who called him an "honorary Scotsman" on 09 if I recall correctly.

I'm Scottish, and lived in Scotland for 25 years.

Pegg's wife is from East Kilbride, near Glasgow. Pegg's accent is like a Glasgow Scots accent (many people, even in the UK, are not familiar with this accent, and usually hear a softer, more intelligible accent in the media). I can assure you, this is a genuine Scottish accent and at least 20% of people Scotland speak like this every day. I have a phonology degree, and I'd say his phonology is pretty much spot on. I was actually surprised to find out he was from Gloucestershire. Where I come from in Scotland, there are many Glaswegians, and this is how they speak. Most Scottish accents you hear on TV are softened (I soften my own when I speak to English people). Watch NEDS (available on YouTube)

if you want to get an idea of a genuine 'Scottish' accent (Glaswegian).

The people on here who are saying Doohan's accent is better, or that Pegg's doesn't sound Scottish - no offence, but you don't know what you are talking about.

Doohan's accent was not Scottish at all - it was a kind of "Scotch-Irish" mishmash with some Canadian thrown in. To anyone who thinks his accent is Scottish - come to Scotland and try to find someone who speaks like that. You won't, unless they are doing an impression of Doohan being Scotty. Or if they're trying to do a Groundskeeper Willie accent from the Simpson's (note - this is not a good Scottish accent).

To any Scottish people here (or people who claim to be Scottish) - if you think Doohan's accent is more Scottish than Pegg's, I have no adequate words to express my bemusement! Go to Glasgow, they speak like Pegg there...

Pegg - Sounds very passable as Scottish accent (West Coast)
Doohan - Fails to sound Scottish.

Craig Ferguson once said that Doohan's Scotty accent sounds like "a Pakistani with a stroke". Don't know if I'd go that far...

Although I almost think that Ferguson himself would make a pretty good Scotty. I wonder if he'd be up for it.

Craig Ferguson would be able to do the Scottish accent (he is Glaswegian) and also the Scottish/American accent of Doohan (which he kind of does when he presents his show). He could play both versions of Scotty in some kind of double universe.

If Scotty is supposed to be from Aberdeen, both Pegg and Doohan fail equally.

Here is an example of the speech of a native of the Northeast of Scotland (where Aberdeen is located for those who don't know). And yes, he is speaking English. I am sure Scotty would not be understood aboard the Enterprise if he spoke like this.

No, you don't need to go that far. In fact, since you already posted the same thing last year (and even then it doesn't seem to have been an accurate quote) you really didn't need to post at all.

Be stronger.

I know it's hard, but you don't have to give in to the compulsion to repost the same unoriginal things you've already posted before.

I agree with Paradise City. Pegg's version of Scotty is like a parody. I can't stand his portrayal or his dreadful accent. Probably the most annoying regular character after Voyager's Neelix. Pine, Quinto and Urban did such a great job slipping into their roles that I don't miss the original actors but Pegg's Scotty makes me pine for Doohan.

Pegg's Scotty is comic relief, intense, action films normally have them so it's okay. I think actor who's actually doing a parody is Karl Urban's Dr. McCoy; I know there were moments in TOS where he would get excited but not in every scene he had. Urban does that crap in every scene he's in, completely monkeying off of the reactions from DeForest Kelley instead of making the McCoy character his own.

Whoa, totally disagree with you there, I can think of over half a dozen scenes with him in in the 09 movie alone where he wasn't "excited". I think he does a great McCoy.

That's one way to look at it. Guess the same can be said for Spock, but to me that's what makes it work.To me he wouldn't be McCoy without that personality.

You can have the McCoy personality without doing " DeForest Kelley". I think Pine and Quinto manage to be Kirk and Spock without being "Shatner" and "Nimoy".

Pegg does a better Scottish accent than I do. And I'm Scottish.

There's always some protective madness when someone does the accent, but Pegg's not playing a guy wandering through the Barra's looking for dodgy DVD's. He's a professional aboard a mixed crew. He sounds pretty much like the people I know in the navy and army who's accent tends to loosen up to communicate, or artists/actors who've had to adjust to reach a wider audience.

I had to adjust my accent just to tour England and have lost my regional tones for something a bit more 'generic' (BBC Scottish-ish) over time.

Compared to my dad (who's been living in the US for around ten years and who's voice has become a strange blend) that Scotty's accent's held up fairly strong.

I also live among the Islay drinking, porridge munchers and Pegg's accent is definitely a lot more authentic but I get the impression that people simply wanted a Doohan impression.
