The battle is lost, but the war rages on.
I'd agree with that. Season 4 was a huge step-up in quality over seasons 1 through seasons 3, largely in part due to Jeri Ryan as Seven.
And on the topic of season 4, here are my brief thoughts on the season finale.
Hope and Fear: A great premise, interesting science, a sympathetic villain hell bent on revenge, lots of action, and some good Janeway/Seven scenes make for a great season finale to my favorite season of the show so far!

P.S. Is it just me or did the end of this episode feel like the ending of INS? The first officer beams the captain aboard at the last minute and leaves the villain to a horrible fate, even though the first officer knows absolutely nothing about the situation on board the villain's ship. For all Chakotay knows, Janeway and Aturis could have come to terms and settled their dispute. Just a minor nitpick.

She did a good job, but I'm really not into her.
I don't find her attractive at all.
Fair enough, I say. I am just infatuated with the Borg as a whole so naturally I like 7 and what they did with her or tried to do with her.
I think saying it was the greatest shift in any TV series is a bit over the top.
I could say that the greatest shift in a TV series ever was Patrick Troughton replacing William Hartnell as the Doctor, I'm sure given some thought I could come up with others.
Maybe so but for american TV, 7 was an institution all to herself.
Star trek is a tiny niche in the tiny niche that is science fiction that is a tiny niche in everything that is not sports.
For that era, I'd have put Dana Scully in the lead, and Seven of Nine somewhere far off in the distance inaudibly.

Night: A good message, a good villain, but a lot of really annoying scenes with Janeway sulking. How could the captain of the ship act that way? If I had been on the bridge when she asked Tom to take the helm, I would have gladly volunteered to do it if it would have meant never having to see her again. Put Chakotay or Tuvok in command.
Despite my criticisms, this was a decent episode.

I watched this and Image in the sand back to back on VHS with a friend in the 90s first view and we marveled.
He said "The Voyager was better than DS9."

But Night flavours a lot of my negative opinion on this Starship Captain.

Night is one of my prime examples for Janeway acting out of character. Her actions in this episode are nearly reprehensible. I would vote this episode down solely based on this.
Other than that, this was a brilliant concept. I wonder if it is scientifically possible to be in a region of space that is so vast that light doesn't penetrate it? I doubt it, but it made for a cool episode.
