Yeah. I'm a giant Star Trek nerd, absolutely positive and excited for this movie...and yet I still haven't seen it.
An NONE of my (mon-Trekkie) fans have any compassion to see it. For me personally this movie might be the one where the JJverse finally get's Trek "right". But for them it's sadly "just another sequel". And to a very disappointing Into Darkness nonetheless. I fully expect them to like the movie after I have dragged them into it. But this movie is absolutely on no ones priority list.
I'm absolutely surprised Paramount did nothing to promote it as a "50th anniversary movie". Skyfall wasn't a masterpriece either, just a really good seguel. But everyone knew it was Bonds 50th birthday. This should have been a really big boost. I don't get it.
Beyond will still perform good, making enough profit and give us a sequel. But it's still underperforming expectations, which is a shame. And all for reason that are not the actual movie itself, but the circumstances around it.
I am absolutely convinced that if this movie came out 5 years ago, as a direct sequel to Trek09, the JJverse Trek-movies would have been a giant super-blockbuster franchise. Instead of a slowly declining, medium sized one, with all the waiting inbetween for a mediocre sequel and fading interest.
