Does anyone know how Beyond is tracking for its opening weekend?

The bump can be seen in all movies for Tuesday, so while I'm not trying to frustrate anyone its not necesarily an isolated Star Trek occurrence.

We would need at least another datapoint (today) differ from the rest to suppose that there is something else going on!

The film made $30 million dollars overseas, for a box office total just over $100 million.

I have read one article where it is stated that Paramount is mounting a defensive strategy where the studio offers excuses for why the film is underperforming.

Bullshit. The film has released overseas in some
countries.
It is too early to draw any firm conclusions. There is still Japan, China, France, Spain, Korea, Emirates, Mexico, South of America, big markets.

Every movie went up on Tuesday, so it must be something other than that.

Our local theater has $5 Tuesdays . And with summer break...

Well, I hope they can defend it enough for a 4th movie . Maybe the foreign box office can help a lot?

One thing I've noticed is there really isn't a rush to see this movie, which I put down to the failure of long term hype.

That goes for me too, I want to see it but I'm not rushing to the theater like with ST09 or Into Darkness.

I think it'll end up with 200m domestic and probably around the same from the foreign box office which may or may not be a disappointment overall, but for this summer it would be a decent enough take because this year has been exceptionally poor. Seems like only comic book movies and Star Wars make any significant amounts of money at the moment.

I think Paramount should be looking at budgets in the 100-150m range and make something like Prometheus or The Martian in scale, these movies adjusted for inflation are making the same type of dough that the first three TNG movies made.

People have been saying it's China that'll make or break the movie since before it was released. Fingers crossed...

Hopefully. Since Alibaba and I think Huahua are involved, they should be promoting it well

I wonder if the dumbness & disappointment of Khan made a lot of people wary of this movie. Which is a shame... if we had the previous anticipation, fans would have hoped it like the Force Awakens

Yeah. I'm a giant Star Trek nerd, absolutely positive and excited for this movie...and yet I still haven't seen it.

An NONE of my (mon-Trekkie) fans have any compassion to see it. For me personally this movie might be the one where the JJverse finally get's Trek "right". But for them it's sadly "just another sequel". And to a very disappointing Into Darkness nonetheless. I fully expect them to like the movie after I have dragged them into it. But this movie is absolutely on no ones priority list.

I'm absolutely surprised Paramount did nothing to promote it as a "50th anniversary movie". Skyfall wasn't a masterpriece either, just a really good seguel. But everyone knew it was Bonds 50th birthday. This should have been a really big boost. I don't get it.

Beyond will still perform good, making enough profit and give us a sequel. But it's still underperforming expectations, which is a shame. And all for reason that are not the actual movie itself, but the circumstances around it.

I am absolutely convinced that if this movie came out 5 years ago, as a direct sequel to Trek09, the JJverse Trek-movies would have been a giant super-blockbuster franchise. Instead of a slowly declining, medium sized one, with all the waiting inbetween for a mediocre sequel and fading interest.

Star Trek has never been and will never be a mega, hiper blockbuster. These movies are making money. The reboot has rejuvenated the franchise. But where are star trek´s niche audiencies? Network. I think Paramount is going to finish the abramsverse and continuing the franchise with a brand new series on tv. And if it is going to succeed, who knows, they will release a new movie with this cast. My opinion.

Star Trek never could compete with the 'anticipation' for Star Wars. Not even when Trek had its 10-year head-start, and Star Wars wasn't yet one of (if not the) most successful and beloved film franchises of all time.

Hard to blame any of the new guys for failing to catch up, when they started from such a very long way behind.

Paramount only has movie Rights, TV is CBS, and we already know what CBS is doing

I agree, Trek movies are a consistent money maker, and once you know what that number is you need to adjust the production budget to maximize your profit.

I don't think there is any single reason why Beyond is under performing because there are so many different factors: this summer's slow box office, a troubled marketing campaign, a lot of worry surrounding the quality of the movie for the last year, but I do agree with you that the "just another sequel" view is also a factor.

The just another sequel plays into Trek's lack of an ongoing story which has become standard in most tent pole franchise movie series now. Many franchises plot out stories that span several movies and I think Trek's standalone movies don't draw as much interest with modern audiences.

I also think that a lot of the goodwill, interest and buzz around the reboot has faded. It has been 7 years since ST09 came out and in that time it was 4 years until STID came out and 3 more years for Beyond. After the movies come out the franchise does disappear for most casual viewers minds, so that could be another factor, and now that Star Wars is back I think that has sucked some of the interest around Star Trek away.

I just always have believe Star Trek at its core is a tv series and doesn't have the appeal among casual viewers to be a big blockbuster franchise. Star Trek movies were typically financially successful in the past because they were produced on small budgets.

I think we're all over-thinking this. The numbers and reaction for Beyond are good enough to have much higher box office. There are three simple reasons for lower box office in my opinion:

1. July release. Something I was worried about. The biggest factor.

2.The "soft" box office this year affected later films in the summer. I wonder if this might even start a trend where Hollywood movies do worse in the USA while the spreading affluence overseas simply makes them the main audience for these films.

3. Non-Trekkies loved Into Darkness. They don't care if it was a Khan reveal. But if they hear stirrings from the trekkie fringes it might make them less keen to see a new film. Some of the word of mouth has been that the movie is sure to please Trekkies. After having 2 less Trekkie pleasing movies, but very crowd-pleasing ones it may be keeping some of those on the fence from seeing it.

I'm still happy it got made and it may wind up being one of my most re-watched films.
