Count, I wouldn't take the archaeology line personally - I think the Doctor was making a point about expeditions rather than a scientific discipline. How many has he come across that cause trouble (Tomb of the Cybermen popped straight into mind for one).

ETA: damn, beaten to the punch! :)

[SNIP]

As for the line "I'm a time traveller. I point and laugh at archeologists.": It certainly rubbed me the wrong way. Ok, I'm an archeology student so I'm biased but it seemed to be slightly out of character for the Doctor to look down upon a whole branch of scientists (if you take his initial annoyed reaction to the team being archeologists into account).

I can see what you mean there, but it's also a bit of an in-joke... in form, the story's a bit of a remake of Tomb of the Cybermen (dead city, dodgy archaeologists and the Doctor turn up just in time for it to turn lethal), so 'Oh, tell me you're not archeaologists' read to me as 'Oh, not again...'

I thought it was just that he was so much more powerful than an archaeologist... like The Hulk might point and laugh at your run-of-the-mill bodybuilder.

Yeah, I guess, it's just the Doctor's arrogant side shining through. I'm just a liitle sad I'm not included in his appreciation for geeks but I couldn't hold a grudge against 10, anyway. Pretty boy indeed. :p

Question though, if River knew the Doctor from her past, then does that mean the Doctor will travel back to a earlier time and meet up with her, or does she travel in time and encounter an older him.

Something about that book of hers dont add up either.
I'm surprised no one else has commented on this so far, so I'll do it - she's an archaeologist, she's got a diary, she's got a serious conection of some kind to the Doctor... she is Bernice Summerfield from the novels.
(Not, I stress literally - she's not going to turn around and say , 'Oh, by the way, my real name is...'. But thematically...)
Yup, that pretty much sums it up.

Count Zero, I'm surprised you find the archaeologist line insulting. I understand it's your profession, but I just don't see The Doctor being arrogant with that comment. In the classic series, he often made fun of Einstein and other physicians, calling them idiots, and as physics graduate, I find those lines hilarious.

Heck, as a student of English and literature as a whole, I loved The Shakespeare Code for all its jabs.

I was hoping he'd mention Jack since he is also from the 51st century

I loved this episode, Fantastic, can't wait for teh conclusion!

Oh, what was the deal with the "Daves"

There was Dave the captain, and the "other Dave" who seemed kinda dumb, what was up with that?

I think it was just a quirky way to introduce the characters (and that does happen in real life where you have two people with the same name). Better than having the Doctor ask him for a hug at least.

Well, she did have the "Squareness" gun that Captain Jack had, so maybe she's a time agent....but it could be a typical gun of the 51st century, of course.

More likely the latter - series 2 of Torchwood revealed that:

The Time Agency is gone, there are only 7 agents left (whether that includes Jack isn't clear)

I thought it was bloody good actually. Here's an idea about the spoilers mentioned in this:

Wouldn't it be interesting if the little girl turned out to be a younger River and Colin Salmon was an older Doctor?

I haven't really been following this season but I happened to watch last night and it was easily the best I've seen for a long time. Very impressed with the writer.

Excellent stuff.

I am so late to the thread everything I wanted to say has been said.

Roll on part 2.

This was the frst episode that I have given "Fantastic!" to. It was just superb with some great chilling moments for both adults and kids alike.
Looking forward to part 2 next week!:)

1. Jenny after a regeneration. Unlikely as their relationship seemed anything but father/daughter
Also cant be as she said he looked younger than she has ever seen him, hes already met Jenny so he cant look younger (only the same)
2. Romana
3. Rose (assuming breathing in the time vortex imbued her with the ability to regenerate- hey you never know)
same as Jenny, they have already met so he will look older (didnt Donna or someone say something about him looking older than before?)
4. non of the above, just a character the doctor has yet to meet.
This ones the most likely, someone hes not yet met

But now he has met her. But technically she hasn't met him. So when they do finally meet he will recognise her but she won't know who he is. This is going to be fun.

A couple small consolations for the low ratings: the AI was 89, a tie for the best the show's ever received and the first time it's gotten that result on a non-finale episode, and the Sunday repeat audience was 1.14 million, twice the figure for the "Unicorn and the Wasp" repeat.

I think there's an added degree of funness as well. At least from our perspective. Some speculation. Suppose she dies in the 2nd part. The next time the Doctor sees her, he might exclaim, but I saw you die! An inadvertant spoiler. She now knows that when he first meets her, she dies.

This would explain her comment of "please tell me you know me." Because, she'd know if this was the first time he met her, she'll be dying soon.
