Doctor Who – 4x08 – Silence in the Library (Grade/Discuss)

Fantastic!

No other way to describe this one but fantastic! Great mood atmosphere, intriguing story, etc. Great all around!

It sounds like the Future Companion (forget her name) new the Doctor way, way in his future, but was during his current regeneration or not. The way she was describing how he looked young now, but not totally different, makes me think the 10th incarnation lives quite a long time! Neat idea, a future companion. Had to happen sometime!

I guess the big question is, why are all the shadows gathering on the library planet? Maybe because other planets are dissappearing? Is it connected to the Shadow Proclamation?

Can't wait for part 2!

I hope that the infestation of shadows is linked to something big and far-reaching - something that has implications beyond this two-parter. That'd be very cool indeed.

The Doctor says that they're on all planets but he's never seen such an infestation. It sounds like they're mostly harmless usually. Maybe like some locusts, before they swarm. It could either be a natural part of the cycle (as with locusts) or an outside influence causing this (like Satan's Pit with the Ood).

As for which regeneration, already posited in my review that the 10th incarnation gets very old. The way she looked at him, recognized him, and talked about him getting heavier, rather than saying he totally changed!

Maybe this is a lead-in to a lot of time passing for the Doctor between S4 and the specials?
 
Question though, if River knew the Doctor from her past, then does that mean the Doctor will travel back to a earlier time and meet up with her, or does she travel in time and encounter an older him.

Something about that book of hers dont add up either.

Well, she did have the "Squareness" gun that Captain Jack had, so maybe she's a time agent....but it could be a typical gun of the 51st century, of course.

Oh and Donna has something on her back, i thought that would of been the shaddow getting ready to kill her.

Mmh, I'm not as impressed as most other people seem to be. I guess, I'll wait for the conclusion before I cast my vote. Somehow, the story didn't really grab me. It felt a little too clean emotionwise. I had the same problem with Blink and The Girl In The Fireplace, to be honest, but those episodes were still gripping. I must say I didn't find the shadows creepy at all, no comparison to the gas mask people or the Angels of Death.

I don't know what to think of River Song's remarks about the Doctor being so young. She recognized him, so I assume she met a much older 10. I wonder how they'll fit that into te continuity when Tennant leaves. On the other hand I wouldn't mind seeing him playing the Doctor for a lot longer.... :)

As for the line "I'm a time traveller. I point and laugh at archeologists.": It certainly rubbed me the wrong way. Ok, I'm an archeology student so I'm biased but it seemed to be slightly out of character for the Doctor to look down upon a whole branch of scientists (if you take his initial annoyed reaction to the team being archeologists into account). I'm well aware of the fact that both archeology and history only offer a very incomplete or even twisted view on past cultures as opposed to what a time traveller would experience. But since we can't travel in time, this is the only way we can learn anything about the distant past and therefore about us. Usually, the Doctor has a rather positive view on human curisosity. So, his remarks surprised me. Oh well.

And now for something completely different: Am I the only one who thought the names were lame? I mean, Miss Evangelista and River Song? Come on, that sounds like bad fan fiction to me! Or names a little girl would make up, so I'm hoping for a gigantic plot twist...:cool:

River is in her 40s. Older perhaps if humans age more gracefully in the future. The 2nd Doctor talked to the brigadier of an adventure they hadn't had together yet from the brigadiers perspective in the five Doctors. She's had plenty of life, an entire journal worth of experiences where he has intruded on her at different stages in her life... And his.

I don't know how it could have been put much clearer on the show.

Although, considering that He could meet her in her early 20s next, they could have the role split between a few actresses of similar appearances... But considering how much older re "tired" the Doctor is expected to seem to her, thinking of Deleen meeting the young John Sheridan who had so much innocence in his eyes wondering why she's kissing him...

Oh hell.

The skip year.

The succession of movies replacing the series.

Huge amounts of time can can be dividing these stories that there could be a century inbetween each movie and he meets up with River for a different adventure... And they could subtly age David, and change the tardis and his affectations and companions and... Wouldn't it be fun to see one of human companions bee 30 years older from natural aging between movies in the skip year, that a completely different actor (I hate the old age make up.) has to be used?

Talulah Riley coincidentally sports the name of a... y'know from Bugsy Malone. But I'm more reminiscent of how in Soilient Green that important men were given females referred to as "furniture"... Cause she wasn't there for much else more than being something for Lux to put his feet up on and if he did 'own" her then he probably reinvented every aspect of her appearance to please his needs and vanity.

Although, I thought Tululah was excellent in Saint Trinians and it's odd that she was already in both a Miss Marple and a Poirot TV film but fell one episode short of the mark for being included in the Unicorn and the wasp

She was also in the movie version of Pride & Prejudice, another story written by a brilliant female author. Here's hoping The Doctor visits her sometime in the future.

I'm surprised no one else has commented on this so far, so I'll do it - she's an archaeologist, she's got a diary, she's got a serious conection of some kind to the Doctor... she is Bernice Summerfield from the novels.
(Not, I stress literally - she's not going to turn around and say , 'Oh, by the way, my real name is...'. But thematically...)

I can see what you mean there, but it's also a bit of an in-joke... in form, the story's a bit of a remake of Tomb of the Cybermen (dead city, dodgy archaeologists and the Doctor turn up just in time for it to turn lethal), so 'Oh, tell me you're not archeaologists' read to me as 'Oh, not again...'

But know what how you feel: there's a truly awful 'comedy' about science teachers on Radio Four at the moment (Double Science) which just makes me want to torture its smug writers/stars until they a) Prove they actually know more science than an eight-year old, or b) Apologize. On their knees.
 
Wow, that was great.

I hope next week is good, too - I'm worried the plots won't tie together right, since that's not New Who's strong suit.

Ah, I figured it might be a reference to something I didn't know. But that doesn't explain the sentiment in his remark. Well, it's not that important but it kind of bugged me.
