Do You Think You'll Ever Get A Chance To Fly Into Space?

I hate closed spaces as well.

And heights.

but I think I could conquer those fears enough for a few hours in Earth orbit.

Personally, I think I will.

I believe that in the next 25 years or so, the costs of going into orbit at least will come down a great deal.

People have been thinking this since 1960.

Think again.
Hey Squigs - do you think you'll have the chance to take a ride in the Vomit Comet? My brother-in-law who works at the NBL in Houston got a ride. Yes, I'm jealous.

Probably not. JSC's TV would fly on it if they needed a NASA production crew.

But if you want budgets! Oh buddy. We've got budgets!

I can barely pay my rent, and I'll be dead within twenty years ... so barring a huge lotto win fairly soon, I don't stand a chance in hell of getting into space.

I hope so, but I doubt it. So I'll focus on dreams down here on the surface instead.

Too bad that more people aren't more optimistic.

You know what we really need is a war that underscores the need for a large scale manned presence in space.

Something with the Chinese or Russians shooting up our satellite systems for example.

World War I was a major spur to aviation development.

I don't think I'll ever be shot into space while I'm alive.

But I am hoping that by the time I die, it will be cheap to get my ashes shot into space. I'd rather be floating around in space then buried in the ground being eaten by maggots.

Yes Dayton, that's just what we need, more war.

Not a better economy to make private industry take up the space race, but yes, war.

And here's the other shoe, dropping. This whole thread was started just so you could get to this post, wasn't it?

^^ Ya think?

In any case, I think there's a very good chance that space travel will become commonplace in my lifetime. I think technology in various disciplines, from materials science to AI to, ahem, rocket science, is getting close to reaching a critical mass where it will become relatively easy to get to space. After that, it's all spin offs; kind of like what happened with personal computers.

Jesus Christ. I disagreed with a guy. Are we not allowed to do that? Space travel is not progressing at the rate to allow Joe Six-Pack to plunk down a couple of hundred dollars to fly into orbit in a couple of decades. As it stands now, there might not be enough money to send astronauts into LEO.

Joe Six-Pack. Please.

Joe the Plumber will be the first private citizen to go into space, sent there by a private organization. He'll go up there to fix the ISS' toilet and he'll bring his Fox News team with him.

Not at all.

The thread just got me to thinking about air travel and how it took off (no pun intended) after World War I.

I would absolutely love to. I'll be extremely disappointed if I don't get the chance. I hold out hope that I will, either through it becoming cheap enough, or through me becoming rich enough. I have impressive aspirations for such a lazy person. :D

But it didn't. Air travel was still extraordinarily rare until the late 50s. But yes. MOAR WAR!!!
