Do You Think You'll Ever Get A Chance To Fly Into Space?

I've already flown into space. Unfortunately, aliens were sticking strange probes up my ass at the time so I wasn't able to enjoy the experience.

Too bad that more people aren't more optimistic.

You know what we really need is a war that underscores the need for a large scale manned presence in space.

Something with the Chinese or Russians shooting up our satellite systems for example.

World War I was a major spur to aviation development.

Yes Dayton, that's just what we need, more war.

Not a better economy to make private industry take up the space race, but yes, war.
I was thinking the same thing. I'm all for the further expansion of human space travel, but I don't think you can use the word "optimism" while also advocating for yet another war. :wtf:

As for the topic, I really don't think I'll be able to make it up into space in my lifetime. The way things are going, I just don't see those prices coming down nearly enough to make it affordable for an average middle class guy like me (and I don't have a six-pack, nor am I a plumber :(.) Of course, I'm happy to be proven wrong.

Depends on what Branson charges for that 10 years from now. ;)

The first flights are due to take passengers on sub-orbital flights next year on board the first craft ,the VSS Enterprise followed by the VSS Voyager.
It won't be cheap but it will be a fraction of the price of a ride say on the shuttle. They have already taken $30million in bookings.

As for further than that well I think it it depends on the private sector and the way the economy is right now I feel we have along wait for prices that will suit most people's pocketsl

If I have to shoot myself up there on a one-way trip with a homemade rocket launched from my back yard when I'm old and about to keel over anyway, yes.

Maybe my dead body will even score a kinetic kill against a manned Chinese orbiter. You never know...

I'll be there. I'm young enough to live till our lifespans are
significantly increased and the rest will be future history.

I think it's funny they're called the VSS Enterprise and VSS Voyager. I mean, I know they're very famous names and it's partly why Star Trek used the names they did in the first place, but some geek at Virgin still had to be snickering a little. :)

I think I'll be able to experience an orbital flight for less than $10,000 within my lifetime, which puts it in the price range of an expensive vacation and therefore what I'd consider "mass market". Like Jurassic park would have been. I think we'll have intercontinental, sub-orbital flights in the first-class ticket range within a couple of decades. That's not cheap either but lots of people would use it. You think people like the almost day long flight from New York to Sydney or Mumbai? I'd pay twice or three times the ticket price to get there in three hours as would most people who needed to take such a trip I suspect.

Do I expect to go to the moon or mars like I thought I might when I was six years old? No, unfortunately, not unless friendly aliens land tomorrow or something.

Enterprise yes but Voyager? Voyager? Well I guess you can't get too lost on a suborbital flight.

I'm not sure I'd call it much of a vacation though - what's the actual duration of one of those flights? I seem to recall that the zero-g time is about 3 minutes.

Be interesting to see how long it takes before Virgin Galactic has come competition.

And though I would never be able to afford it, I hope to be elected to Congress or a governorship one day, and they already can get free rides in Air Force fighters on occasion for "fact finding" reasons.

Sorry to break this to you, but on this site ALONE you have made FAR too many extremist comments and divulged FAR too much personal info for you to have any chance of ever being elected to any important public office.

Hell, that one post alone would be enough for an attack ad.

"In 2009, supposed conservative Dayton ________ stated that he wanted to serve in congress because of 'free rides in Air Force fighters'. Does this sound like the conservative leadership Arkansas deserves? No. Vote in the Republican primary for a true conservative. One who won't waste your taxdollars. Blankety '18."

It writes itself really. Throw in some grainy home movie shots with Dayton speaking at a nursing home or something and you've already won!

Also, you don't get to fly in "fighters". C-130s. Fighters are for pilots...not congresscritters.

Sure. I'll fly into space when the earth explodes, sending bits of my charred corpse hurtling towards the galaxy's nether regions.

It'll be like old home week.

It happens.

I can always just deny it.

Besides, none of my posts will have been preserved that long to provide any proof of anything.

And U.S. Congressman have in fact gotten free flights in the back seat of the two seat F-16s that are use for training.

Isn't it wrong to lie?

You still have to pass a basic medical exam.

Isn't it wrong to lie?

Generally yes.

But if one is having to do so to prevent unfair personal attacks, I think the argument can be made that it has a legitimate purpose.

Besides, no one is perfect.

I see no problem there. I'm currently fit.

Though I guess if I never get a fighter flight, perhaps I can get a few spins on the Vomit Comet.

Thirty seconds of microgravity isn't going into space but its better than nothing.

We're not talking about unfair attacks - you're saying that you would LIE and deny extreme statements that you have made on this board! What other moral perversions would you try in order to gain political office?
