Do you think Star Trek needed a reboot?

Well, as long as we're shaing, I'll admit to enjoying big band music from time to time.
As far as seeing a silent movie goes, the closest I've come to that was seeing TMP.

Sorry to hear that. I did overplay my had a little though. Maybe predictably (since it had the widest appeal), my wife did like TVH, though it's hardly like she'll recommend popping it into the DVD player when we're deciding what to watch.
My daughters were 6 and 9 when ST09 came out. I took them to it, and they did run around the house for about a month yelling either, "I can do this!" or "I like this ship! It's exciting!" My youngest thinks it's cool she can do the Vulcan Salute, now. So, I'm working on it.
How long before they're old enough to start reading Uncle Greggie's books?
They're in second grade and kindergarten. So, any day now!

I was thinking more along the lines of your brother showing them "Space Seed" and then reading The Eugenics Wars (Your best work IMO.), but they might not be old enough for those yet.

Funny story: many, many years ago, I dedicated my XENA book to another niece, who checked every copy at the local bookstore to make sure her name was in ALL of them!

I don't think it was necessary, but I think it was a valid option, and fortunately it worked out great. It would be hard for new characters to have the connection with the audiences Kirk and company have, and I think it was nice to include Nimoy as a way to link this with the rest of the franchise.
By the time DS9 ended a reboot was required because there the Dominion War's aftermath was so all-encompassing. You couldn't really set a Trek show set in the Alpha Quadrant without being a continuation of DS9 which was never a favorite with the higher-ups.
So I understand the need for a reboot. But I don't like the fact they chose to reboot it as a movie. I sure don't like the way they did a remake/reimagining of the TOS and characters, if it was a remake of TNG that would've been at least watchable (I am not a TOS fan).

Always loved this attitude.
I'm a huge fan of TOS, my favorite, but I'd have been there if they had rebooted TNG, made a continuation TNG, DS9, Voyager or Enterprise movie. Because I like Star Trek.
Just the other day, I was pleased to hear that my little brother has started introducing my nieces to classic STAR TREK, beginning with "The Cage" and "Mantrap."
Good to know he's raising them right!
Nice! The Cage still holds up as excellent, intelligent science-fiction. When I finally impregnate a female I'm gonna raise the spawn on TOS, TNG and DS9. I'll tell them scary bedtime stories of the Abrams film to make sure they behave

True. But she only has eyes for Sheldon Cooper. (and there can't really be more than one of each them, can there?)
