I actually watch the DC TV shows and DSC which both appeal to my older sensibilities.

Maybe your Star Trek is TNG. TOS and the better parts of DS9, IMHO, actually lightened up from time to time.

How is it out of place if TOS presented us with a captain usually joking with executive officers at the end of an episode?

I like to think that the human race will never evolve beyond snark, quips, and wisecracks.

And I suspect Doctor McCoy would agree with me.

It's real hard to sell much Trek merchandise to kids. Folks like Anovos and Eaglemoss do well by selling a (relatively) little bit of high-priced merch to older folks who have credit cards.
