Discovery's lead character will be referred to in the series as “Number One”

Right there at the beginning of every episode.
So Discovery takes place ten years prior to TOS, and its lead character is a female, Lieutenant Commander called "Number One". Maybe this is Number One after she is promoted off of the Enterprise following "The Cage"?

I think we all are taking the "Number One" reveal a bit too seriously. I imagine that she will just be the first officer, casually referred to as "Number One" from time to time.
Nothing to do but spitball until more relevant information comes out. I agree that it will probably just be a nickname for someone. But I like my idea better.
At least she isn't "Number Two."
Can we have a captain that refers to everyone on the ship by their ranking in the chain of command?

As we were first talking about the series and talking to CBS, we said, initially, we’ll only call the character ‘Number One’ because in the Sixties, in the first pilot, Gene Roddenberry was very progressive and had a female first officer. So since [our lead character] is a female first officer, I just loved that we were calling her ‘Number One’."
Her real name will be made known during the first season of DSC.
