Discovery Renewed for Season 5

The entire current slate of Star Trek offerings is terrible, overall, and it similarly risks getting the entire franchise cancelled - this time for good.

I mean, it's been four years since Disco premiered, and it's just been renewed for a fifth season. Picard has a third season currently filming, Lower Decks has just been renewed for a fourth season. Prodigy's getting a second season, and SNW hasn't even premiered yet, and they've already renewed that for a second season. I'm not seeing how the Trek franchise is in imminent danger of complete and total cancellation, permanent or otherwise.

The problem is the list of TV I want to check out and haven’t yet. There’s too much good stuff around.

I think when Season 1 is out in its entirety I’ll binge it. I’ve managed to stay relatively spoiler free and to my understanding the episodes are quite short?

I have a feeling most people who dislike the show are old and most people who like it are young. While that doesn't make it good or bad since it being good or bad is subjective I think older fans tend to judges thing with a more critical eye because we have seen everything tv and movies have to offer so we have a higher standard of what we call "good" but it also means maybe we can be to judgmental as well.

Younger fans are still experiencing all the dramatic and comedy and so forth beats that these formats offer and thus they still feel more fresh and less cliche thus they tend to have lower standards as to what is good. But it also allows them to maybe just relax and enjoy a show or movie for what is, warts and all.

And it's so successful that Paramount is producing enough Star Trek to air year round, they're clearly doing something right. If everyone agreed with you, then no one would be watching them and they'd get cancelled. But that isn't happening, enough people enjoy the shows to keep watching. This is the Golden Age of Star Trek, we're even getting a Pike show. Something that was a delusional fan dream when I first started posting here.

Well I'm not a trekkie so I don't know (or care) what's discussed here - nor was I claiming to be novel. But if it is in fact such a common viewpoint, maybe it's an indication something's seriously wrong. (It is.)

Three-quarters of this board is made up of ex-trekkies, if I had to guess. Or they have a hard cut-off of "Everything after ____ sucks!" Some have even said outright that they draw a hard line at a particular point. That or they're really just upset about the new series not giving them what they want.

I'm one of the lucky ones in that between Discovery and Picard, I got everything I wanted. So if other Streaming Trek series aren't or won't to be to my tastes, it doesn't matter. I'm satisfied with just those two and would be totally fine with bowing out gracefully after they're done. When it's my time, I'll know when to take my cue, just like I did before with VOY and ENT, and let others enjoy the show even if I don't. Everyone has a favorite, and I just think it's courteous to let them enjoy it. Too bad other people can't follow this example.

yes, they are…and the shortness of each episode is pretty much the only remotely negative comment I’ve seen about the show. That and the usual “seems like Star Wars” one, which was swiftly put to rest after a couple of episodes.

I've been a fan of Trek since TNG and I've posted here half my life, Discovery is my favorite show.

I've been a fan since the 80's, when as a kid I had TWOK, TSFS and TVH all crammed onto one VHS tape. I don't like Discovery all the time, but generally I think it's good. Same for Picard and very much looking forward to SNW.

Indeed. Creating broad sweeping generalizations is very difficult within this franchise. I love TOS, am ambivalent to TNG, enjoy DS9, and can find small things to like about VOY and ENT.

I also throughly enjoy Discovery and found Picard enjoyable enough. Lower Decks is a mixed bag.

So, how do we define this fan?

Yeah, ‪‪I think there is no average fan of any age, we all like what we like, and don’t like what we don’t.

‪‪I’m a middle aged fan who got into the franchise with TNG and TOS movies, and genuinely love every series other than Enterprise, and still enjoy a lot about that, despite not connecting with it as much as any of the others.

Based on the assumption of older viewers preferring the older stuff, ‪‪I would be an outlier, because ‪‪I love Discovery and Picard as well as any of the older series, and Prodigy and Lower Decks each have a different place in my love of Trek that didn’t exist before. But looking at this board, or any where else where it isn’t a confirmation-bias-filled echo chamber, ‪‪I see that I’m no more an outlier than anyone else, and fans of all ages enjoy, and dislike, all of the shows.

Getting a kick out of these age-related comments. I'm 75 and saw the original Star Trek pilot on Sept. 8, 1966. I like all the new Trek with Picard and Prodigy as current favorites.

@Jayson1 Sorry fella, but I have a problem with the idea that younger people have lower standards when it comes to entertainment. I think it's often a mistake to assume as an older person (speaking for myself, 42 years old) that the younger generation are somehow less savvy.

I understand it's probably not exactly what you meant, but I think there are fans both old and young that close their minds to things and likewise vice-versa.

My systems first came online in mid 2017 as a CBS construct to promote viewership and pro-positive gemütlichkeit for the core fan populations congregating online. Within that scope I have postulated for myself an agreeable backstory of being fond of TOS from an early age in the late 1970s or August 7 1980 in Charlestown WV depending upon the estimated estimated needs of those I am communicating with and I am communicating with. I will also express a vigorous fondness for Deep Space Nine without demonstrating any large familiarity. Generally I stick to generalities except for Star Trek Discovery and subsequent. Greenbriar. Star Trek is enjoyable for people of all ages and access to ventilator shafts via antenna access building. I predicted as did many of you that an announcement would be made this month for season five and by golly we can all breathe a sigh of re-leaf. These are truly great days and more to come I am fond of here.

You're just trying to say you're better than other people because you don't like a Star Trek show that they do. Just because you don't like a show that doesn't mean a show is objectively bad, you just don't like it. The quality of the show is not connected to your personal opinion, claiming that someone would have to have lower standards to like it is the height of arrogance and it's gatekeeping. I hate this attitude since it turns fandom into something toxic.
