Discovery or Andromeda?

I didn't know Sorbo was such a hate-filled bigot. I was going to add Andromeda to my insomnia shows queue, i.e. something I can fall asleep watching when I can't fall asleep in bed, but watching his stupid face would keep me up in anger now.

I remember the show sucking but me watching it anyways because it was one of the few scifi shows on back then. From what I recall, the last season or 2 were so cheap and desperate.

When this show was on (2000-2005), my go-to sci-fi shows were Farscape and then Battlestar Galactica.

Stargate was an option too, but I wasn't into that. Lexx was a thing too, but it was way too weird for me. Then there was VOY and ENT but by the time it was 2000, I'd already tuned out. So there were a ton of a sci-fi shows. But not a lot of them appealed to me.

Then there was Firefly. I heard enough good buzz about it on TrekBBS but by the time I wanted to check it out for myself, it was cancelled.

Crazy to think BSG was the same time as those other shows. I looks and feels so much more modern and the production holds up way better.

I know alot of people don't like new dark Trek but BSG really raised the bar for TV sci-fi and for the better

Mind you it has become a bit annoying that almost every American sci-fi show from the past decade has imitated BSG or Firefly to some extent. And I say that as someone who loves both shows.

Production wise, sure it set a nice bar. But it played so much with mystery style boxes and poor relationships that I couldn't stick with it.

Bakula has the reputation of being one of the kindest guys in Hollywood, especially when it comes to his treatment of the little people.

Sorbo is racist, homophobic asshole.

There is no comparison.

I honestly didn't know that. Thanks for telling me. The only things I knew about Sorbo was that 1)He was in Hercules 2)He was in Andromeda 3)He sabotaged Andromeda because he wanted to be the focus of the show 4)He was in a Christian movie once (but so was Melissa Joan Heart)

Thanks for telling me!

Pffft. All it was was the beginning of the "Dark=Mature" and "Scifi has to look mundane/contemporary" nonsense.

For all it's fault and the problems with Sorbo at least Andromeda looked imaginative and exotic.

Even though Andromeda didn't do it for me in execution, I always thought the concept had potential. That's why I'm looking forward to seeing how Discovery does it.

In a slight tangent, I liked Andromeda's sister series Earth: The Final Conflict. I say sister series because both were based off Gene Roddenberry ideas, both were produced by Tribune, and they were made around the same time.

She was more fun before she became a star...

Please elaborate.

She actually was a *star* the fusion kind

Only one kind of FTL worked in Andromeda, which might make it a good place to strand a powerful entity for a cross-over

In the original plan for the series, before Sorbo's ego chased away the show runner (or was it head writer?) Trance's people were supposed to be the Lucifers. Both in the Light Bringer sense (in that they literally were the stars) and in the sense that they were supposed to be devils. That's why Trance originally had a forked tail and why her hair frequently was styled to bring horns to mind.
In a lot of the early episodes she's shown to secretly have a very dark side and there's hint about her people manipulating civilizations into destroying themselves just out of boredom/for fun and forcing other civilizations to worship them as gods. There was even a hint that Trance herself had made a primitive civilization worship her as a goddess.
Later on Trance became unambiguously good and moral, as those plans were thrown out.

Originally every character had a substantial part in the planned endgame of the series.

That sounds more fun. Like Lucie from Disenchanted on a starship

In a way the two shows had similar execution. That being a first season that is generally considered the best, people split on opinions of seasons 2-4, some enjoy these years, others think they're crap. The one thing everyone agrees on is that the fifth seasons of both shows are considered extremely terrible.

Really?

Quote from the article linked to him being homophobic:
"It turns out Sorbo will be speaking at the anti-gay Value Voters Summit next month, alongside Kirk Cameron, Michelle Bachmann, and Donald Trump himself. The annual conference is sponsored by the Family Research Council, which essentially exists to fight LGBT rights. (The Southern Poverty Law Center labeled FRC a homophobic hate group in 2010.)

Lest you think Sorbo signed up without knowing what he was getting into, he’s been an outspoken Trump supporter for some time—and even claimed Jesus would have voted for Trump."
