Discovery ending with Season 5

I don’t think Star Trek was conceived as a family show. I think GR envisioned is an adult drama that explored topical issues through the lens of Science Fiction. That it appealed to the kids (and I was one in 1966) wasn’t quite what he wanted. It also had to conform to standards and practices of the day. So a line like “let’s get the hell out of here” caused much hand-ringing on all levels. The S&P have changed over the years and the use of a word like “hell” doesn’t even bat an eye, even on a “family” show. Next Gen could use the word “shit” as long at it was in French, “Shite” pops up on shows that would blanche at using “shit”.
Yeah, I never found Star Trek to be as much of a family show, and closer to an adult drama. Certainly not something my family and I gathered around to watch, unlike say Everybody Likes Raymond or stuff like that.

I wonder if it especially irritated him that it was considered a "kids' show" for most of the 70s and 80s?

Kind of rolled with it, TAS. ;)
SF has long been looked at as “kids stuff” by folks unfamiliar with it, Especially in prose form. Film SF has long has the “kiddie” label. When it wasn’t being sensational and exploitive.

Yes but 'ass' didn't always have the meaning it has today. 'Ass' back then was short for 'jackass'. It also had the other meaning as well but back then media could play it up as the other non-bad word.
Oh please.

Way back in 1986 (I was 23):

If you wanted to call someone a "Jackass"; you USED the word "Jackass".

"Pompous Ass" was always short for Pompous Asshole".

then, and now.

This show did many important things regarding representation and exploring old and familiar territory of Star Trek. But for this Trekkie, the series was marred by an unfocused vision, an over-reliance on Michael Burhnam being at the center of everything while failing its supporting characters by giving them the spotlight only in their last episodes. That, and amongst other things, is why this is a Trek show I do not like.

If you like the show, more power to ya. You got more seasons than what Enterprise, Picard and TOS got along with a higher budget and some pretty big names. Hope you get what you want in the last season.

More seasons, but less episodes WRT ENT (98) and TOS (80).

And as far as PICARD ending in S3 <--- Three seasons were all that Patrick Stewart agreed to do - so the series ending with S3 was known before filming started on the first episode of Season 1.

There is no way in hell this is a bottle show.

The vast majority of the upcoming episodes take place in-ship, like TWOK. It's a submarine battle, that culminates in something big. Amusingly I think Levar Burton may have already leaked one of the major reveals of episode 9/10. So avoid his Twitter.

As much as I want my kids to enjoy the character of Picard, Data, etcc I can't because there's Admiral Fuckety Fuck and other such moments.
People have to be exposed to swearing at some point.
They say Doomcock is still creaming his pants a day after this announcement.
I imagine he's basically Randy Marsh jizzing all over the place upon finally finding working internet and access to his porn in that South Park episode where the town lost their internet.

...Discovery has been canceled rather than ending per the collective decision-making of all parties - but it does change the temperature, if you will.

Relatively few TV series end "by the collective decision-making of all parties." There's almost always one or two essential partners - the producing studio, the producers, the network and/or key cast members - who decide that they're unwilling to continue, and everyone else has to adjust to that. If it's the studio or network that pulls the plug, it's most often financial considerations.

The real distinction is whether a cancellation decision is sudden or not. If it is, it's most often initiated by the people paying the bills.

This show's cancellation probably has more to do with the overall direction of Paramount+ and its financial outlook, rather than having anything specific to do with the show itself. As someone at another studio described the streaming environment recently, the days of spending a lot of money on projects because they're fun are over.

A five year-old streaming series doesn't attract new subscribers the way new shows do. The drop-off can be steep. This is why Netflix famously cancels "popular" shows after two or three seasons. The money going to an older show is paying diminishing returns; freeing it up to invest in new product is better business.

In the case of Star Trek , with this cancellation the amount of money they'll be spending on new Trek in the next twelve months should drop precipitiously. Over the last few years they've funded three live-action series, all much more expensive than animation. Well, they're not spending any more on Picard and they won't be on STD. They apparently still have a season of SNW to make in 2023. That's a lot of savings that can be redirected into other projects, including new Trek shows in 2024.

I imagine he's basically Randy Marsh jizzing all over the place upon finally finding working internet and access to his porn in that South Park episode where the town lost their internet.

Like the streaming networks themselves, Doomcock cares primarily about how to please his subscribers. He's kind of brilliant at his scam, and when the helmet comes off I imagine he walks away laughing to grab a beer.

Cripes, and some folks call me pedantic. When does a higher episode count equate to a better series? One could argue that Discovery did a lot with the time it had compared to most of the episodic Star Trek shows prior to it. Enterprise may have had more episodes, but that's not much of a counter-argument since the general consensus is that it didn't start being good until Season Four. 22 episodes out of it's 98 episode run.

And seasons 2 and 3 of Picard were shot back to back. I know what we're dealing with.

Since every season finale has worked as if they could stop the series to right there (plus or minus a few tweaks), hopefully they don't have to adjust too much. Otherwise, they're better off adding a few episodes or doing a special.

Where did I ever comment on the quality of the various series? And as far as I'm concerned, while I enjoyed Discovery seasons 1 and 2; I thought season 3 was absolute crap, and season 4 was poorly plotted with a decent beginning episode and a very good ending; but the rest of it not so much.

Nowhere in my initial response was I debating the perceived quality of any of the series.
