Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

No it does not. It is better at emulating a certain era in ST, but DSC comes closer in tone to In The Pale Moonlight or WOK -two of Trek's most respected works no less.

It is closer in tone, but no where in the ballpark when it comes to execution.

Where have we entered this freaky alternate reality where a series that shamelessly copy-pastes '90's Trek (as I recall VOY was heavily critisized for it) is praised, and a series that seeks boundaries and tries something different is ridiculed and put down....?

If that is all you see in The Orville, then you've decided to look at it in only the most superficial of terms. Your loss.

Funny thing is that you and others seem to have approached Discovery no differently.

Well, no. That would mean we would cross our arms, stomp our feet over Discovery looking like Star Trek. People have went into quite a bit of detail about what they feel is wrong with the show. All one has to do is read.

Yet what seems to have upset you and others gets overblown, like the bafflement over questionable characters like Lorca. That's why I've constantly asked on this thread for the last few pages WHY some are perceiving the character as being written to be "relatable" or idolized by audiences when he does despicable acts.

So defensive.

Fact: every episode of the Orville, except for the pilot, has been a complete, 100% ripoff of a Star Trek episode. Saying you like it better is being safe.
Seth MacFarlane ripping off another show? What else is new?

They are spending probably three times the money The Orville is (which makes the writing on Discovery that much more disappointing), so it should outclass it at every turn. But there is one thing The Orville clearly does better than Discovery, and that's being "Star Trek".

you mean ripping off your favorite trek episodes will strongly resemble star trek? who knew.

Discovery is a better written show and is plenty sci fi and very star trek. trek has been many things over a great many years. it may not be trek that you like but its in fact very star trek.

Discovery is good at teching the tech - that's one of the things they've carried over whole cloth from the 1990s versions of Star Trek. It's not exactly science fiction, but it's not anything much else, either.

its actually EXACTLY science fiction. star trek is science fiction. its also adventure and drama. but yes its science fiction.

Whether its copying, or emulating, or is inspired by, or whatever else you want to call it, the fact of the matter is that it has consistently scored higher on episode by episode basis than STD. I'll be super happy if STD gets to The Orville level this Sunday though.

The Orville... the worst TV has to offer. It's so shockingly bad.

I came up with a game. Every time The Orville rips off a Star Trek episode, just add "with dick jokes" to the Trek episode title, and that's what The Orville is.

For example:

Episode 6 of The Orville was "The Enterprise Incident with dick jokes".
Episode 5 of The Orville was "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky with dick jokes"

It actually works.
Not seeing it. It's one of those things were, regardless of superficial similarities (which have been gone over again and again that Star Trek has done) the characters are actually what make it different.
Kind of hard not to when you're taking every story and every beat from Star Trek. Even the lighting and the cinematography.

I don't dislike The Orville but I don't respect it. Discovery has its flaws but I'd recommend it over The Orville in a heartbeat simply because Discovery has the potential for greatness (and has reached it a couple of times IMO) whereas The Orville can never transcend its "Star Trek but with hack jokes" concept.
The Orville already has attempted to do so, but the constant Star Trek comparisons will not allow it to stick.
No it does not. It is better at emulating a certain era in ST, but DSC comes closer in tone to In The Pale Moonlight or WOK -two of Trek's most respected works no less. What 'Star Trek' is supposed to be is so subjective.

This happens every time. If it doesn't "feel" like Star Trek (again, not sure what that feels like but apparently it is known some how) then it isn't Star Trek. It's why "Galaxy Quest" gets tossed in to the list of "Top Star Trek films" and why Kelvin Trek gets belittled.

I like Orville; I like DSC. I don't watch either because "Star Trek." I watch them because I enjoy science fiction.

Remember a time when there were fans claiming Abram's films were "not Star Trek"?

Yeah.

Yeah well it's your loss to have this narrow, negative view of DSC so we're even.

i've always said I liked The Orville (though hate the 'fan attitude' surrounding it), but come on: it is what it is. It's no more a deep, original quality show than a Snoop Dogg album is a classical masterpiece...

It takes an enormous ammount of negative energy getting involved in this thread... I knew this would happen as soon as I learned Seth was making the Orville... I know I should just stay out of here, but I guess I'll always be a Trek defender.

scored higher where?

'the fact of the matter'..... There is NO FACT, it is YOUR OPINION....

Comparison is the thief of joy.

trust me, there is no need to defend trek against orville because no matter what anyone says, orville isnt star trek, its not more trek than star trek. its boner jokes with a sci fi backdrop. there is nothing against which to defend.

It really is more than that, but I do agree that Orville isn't Star Trek. It's just Orville.

respectfully i dont think orville is much more than that. but im happy you think it is. cause at the end of the day youre having more fun while im being pedantic about it ;);)

Dick jokes? I'm sorry but space travel conducted by the use of interdimensional fungus ranks among the dumbest sci-fi ideas I have ever heard. From adults. You'd give children a pass for thinking up something like this. The Orville has its comedy, but it's doesn't expect you to buy into the concept of a spore drive. It's different to be different.
