False. I do not watch the Orville for the humor. Now admit you're wrong
Of course I'm speaking in general terms, not ultimate.
If one person watches for something other than the humor I'd be wrong to speak in such ultimate terms.
My clumsy phrasing aside I'd bet my left arm on my premise. Without the humor it wouldn't survive. It's non humor elements aren't serious enough.
Take firefly as an example. It wasn't a true blue "comedy" per say but it was silly. It was also serious, as I believe Orville is funny and others tell me it is also serious. But Firefly's serious to me is truly serious. I don't think the Orville's serious moments are really done that seriously.
I'm three episodes in, and I know I'm not watching for the humor because the humor is NOT working for me.
Frankly, the humor feels tacked on. If you were to edit out all the jokes it would play like a run of the mill Trek episode. I have a feeling MacFarlane really did want to make a more straight forward sci-fi adventure but then got cold feet so he added gags to make it seem less of a homage and more of a parody, but the humor is rarely integral to the stories being told.

Orville is like the shows Psyche, Monk or Scrubs. It's a real show with goofy characters. A little bit of drama, a little bit of comedy and a little bit of sci-fi. I am really enjoying it and there is no reason Orville and Discovery both can't exist.
Because the Orville doesn't try to be super serious I can buy that two Union members where infiltrating a Krill ship and acting stupid and not get caught. Just like I can accept Monk is allowed to help the police despite all his personal issues. When I know in real life that would never happen.
STD tries to be serious so I would not accept that the crew could sneak around on a Klingon ship being stupid and not being caught. The premise of the shows alter my suspension of disbelief.
It's actually why I enjoy many super hero movies. Captain America doing crazy fighting moves I can say, "Super soldier formula!" but when the Kingsmen jump around like zero G ninjas I groan inside and lose interest. Even though A super soldier formula and Norse gods and whatnot are completely BS they at least offered an in universe explanation that my mind has accepted. Kingsmen is portrayed as regular people who can do things that no normal human can do so I am acutely aware they are all in front of green screens and in wire harnesses.
Anyway, there is room for both shows to be enjoyed if people take them for what they are.

This is what I mean when I say Orville can't survive without the comedy, it IIIISS a comedy, and without it we'd be left trying to take two union members infiltrating a krill ship acting like idiots and not getting caught seriously.

Here, here. Well said. There's a weird sect of DISC fans that act butthurt about Orville...just as some Orville has fans that categorically reject DISC because it it's dark and dreary and has ambiguous or flagrantly unlikable characters.
Both have potential. This is a good thing. Trek was dead from 2005 until now (on TV). I shake my head at some of the fanboyish lowest common denominator potshots. Two Trek shows going about it in different but exciting ways. Let it play out.
Chekhov and Uhura were sneaking around the aircraft carrier enterprise in st IV.
I haven’t seen the Orville ep yet...it’s not on in the U.K. I have seen ep1 thanks to a friend though.

Well, yeah. The episode was focused on the Krill ship. The jaunt to the Enterprise in STIV was a piece of the story.
