Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

I've sometimes wondered why someone didn't buy the rights to Forbidden Planet and just run a new franchise on that, safe from Trek lawyers (if anything Trek got its start from Forbidden Planet)
I've wondered that myself.

There should be an all out snark war. Not between the fans, but between the shows, and the writers. For season 2 of each show, they could take subtle pot shots at each other through the scripts.

That would take some creativity on behalf of Discovery's writers. Not something I'm sure they're capable of.

If Discovery is without the spore drive, I think the Orville is both faster and more powerful in a fight. With Discovery having the spore drive, the Orville would be screwed.

This is what we're supposed to be doing, right? ;)
The Orville is actually using one of the early Star Trek 'fan' theories regarding Star Trek Warp Factors - IE that say Warp 7 = Seven LY per hour.
^^^
This was prior to the TOS FJ Tech Manual and subsequent Star Trek related Tech manuals over the years.

Nice, simple and straight-forward. No wonder it didn't stick on Star Trek.
Considering BOTH shows have always traveled at the "speed of the plot" - it doesn't really make much of a difference, because hell, in Star Trek's case, if it wasn't on screen it wasn't canon. The only real quantitative thing we have for 'Warp Speed' is the thing ST:VOY hammered into the audience "70,000 LY for home. At top warp speed that will take us 75 years to get back.."

Versus TNG going Warp 10 with no ill effects, or TOS traveling heading out of the galaxy like it wasn't a problem.

Gave the pilot a shot. It's cute, even though its particular humor doesn't always work for me (oh hey, he finally got his soda). I'll check out the rest soon, but I think it's disingenuous to make claims that this Trek, because that would be unfair to this show. It carries certain sensibilities that Trek has held but it's priorities couldn't be more different and on that note it should be seen as its own thing much like GALAXY QUEST.

As far as snark wars go, Joss Whedon is still tops. Now THAT is a show I wish Fox gave more of a chance like THE ORVILLE.

Put them on equal technological terms, and DSC kicks Orville's butt. Ed Mercer is a nice guy, people like him don't stand a chance against "what ever it takes" types of people like Lorca. Not in real life, at least.
