I've wondered that myself.I've sometimes wondered why someone didn't buy the rights to Forbidden Planet and just run a new franchise on that, safe from Trek lawyers (if anything Trek got its start from Forbidden Planet)

There should be an all out snark war. Not between the fans, but between the shows, and the writers. For season 2 of each show, they could take subtle pot shots at each other through the scripts.

The Orville is actually using one of the early Star Trek 'fan' theories regarding Star Trek Warp Factors - IE that say Warp 7 = Seven LY per hour.If Discovery is without the spore drive, I think the Orville is both faster and more powerful in a fight. With Discovery having the spore drive, the Orville would be screwed.
This is what we're supposed to be doing, right?![]()

Considering BOTH shows have always traveled at the "speed of the plot" - it doesn't really make much of a difference, because hell, in Star Trek's case, if it wasn't on screen it wasn't canon. The only real quantitative thing we have for 'Warp Speed' is the thing ST:VOY hammered into the audience "70,000 LY for home. At top warp speed that will take us 75 years to get back.."Nice, simple and straight-forward. No wonder it didn't stick on Star Trek.
Versus TNG going Warp 10 with no ill effects, or TOS traveling heading out of the galaxy like it wasn't a problem.Considering BOTH shows have always traveled at the "speed of the plot" - it doesn't really make much of a difference, because hell, in Star Trek's case, if it wasn't on screen it wasn't canon. I would totally watch that. There should be an all out snark war. Not between the fans, but between the shows, and the writers. For season 2 of each show, they could take subtle pot shots at each other through the scripts.
I'm not so sure, Stamets seems to have a pretty solid understanding of snark, from what I've seen.MacFarlane would win any and all snark wars with, well almost anyone.
Matt Stone and Trey Parker put him in his place.MacFarlane would win any and all snark wars with, well almost anyone.
This is so disrespectful.... and unjust. Cheap shot, give these guys some credit. I like Orville's writing, but it isn't like the ideas are these crazy wild original ones...That would take some creativity on behalf of Discovery's writers. Not something I'm sure they're capable of.

Put them on equal technological terms, and DSC kicks Orville's butt. Ed Mercer is a nice guy, people like him don't stand a chance against "what ever it takes" types of people like Lorca. Not in real life, at least. If Discovery is without the spore drive, I think the Orville is both faster and more powerful in a fight. With Discovery having the spore drive, the Orville would be screwed.
