Sure, I get that, but when DS9 showed that the vast majority of Starfleet's forces consisted of Excelsiors and Mirandas, then that stretches credibility a bit.

Thinking of military aircraft, most workhorse attack/fighter aircraft are platforms that have been in service 40 to 50 years, and are still in production. Updated, certainly, but still that platform. Others have come and gone, but the good ones prove useful for a long time.

If that applies to jets, I'd assume a good starship design could be expected to serve a century, with periodic updates. Apples to oranges, maybe, but it's how I frame it in my mind.

I hated the look of the Galaxy class from the get-go, but that was the ship we got. I'll bet some talented artist could have drawn up a refit Galaxy that looked better than both the original and the Sovereign. Honestly, I thought Excelsior looked like an abortion from the get-go, too.

Yeah, I would agree with that. That's where it does slip firmly in to the budget territory.

I didn't have an issue with destroying the E-D (though I might have liked it to have survived at least its first film appearance); I had an issue with how they did it.

The NX Enterprise survived 100+ years in the most dangerous part of space in "E2"
