Did they make a fat joke in regards to Scotty?

Wouldnt the script be the same, no matter who was cast? I thought Pegg nailed it too. And I have no probelm seeing Doohan deliver the lines Pegg did. As I said before Doohan was great at some of the comic stuff Scotty did in the series and the movies. He could play it broad like in the drunk scene in "By Anyother Name" or the more controled stuff like in "Tribbles". He could be excitable or calm depending on the situations. Put the ship in a tough spot and Doohan's Scotty would complain one minute then get excited about a solution to the problem, Pegg's Scotty seems the same.
But that's just it. Pegg's always gigly excited and looking for comical relief. Scotty is more balanced than that. Even with more development, I just can't see how it could get better. Pegg just isn't an actor, he's a comedian.

for chrissakes, man!! Pegg has only been in one frackin' Trek movie! how many trek movies (and episodes) was Doohan in?

give it a rest. there's more to life than this :wtf:

Nerys Myk has it right, of course: Pegg can only do what the script allows him to do. I have to admit, though: I don't have faith that the new creative team will ever give him much more to do than be comic relief. Should that happen, it won't be Pegg's fault.

If Pegg ever wanted out they should just kill the character instead of recasting. There is no reason why you have to have all the TOS characters in the movies.

I don't know why I didn't think about this before and I am proably reading to much into this but I think it is possible. When Scotty is complaining about the lack of food on the planet, it just occuried to me that they might have been going with this joke since we know Scotty got fat in the movies. Granted I also think having Kirk eat a apple while doing the Kobyashi Maru scenario is callback to "Wrath of Khan" when he is eating a apple while talking about how he cheated on the test.

Jason

You could not be more wrong on your first point.

You could try, but you'd fail.

Congratulations on your second point. In the three weeks this movie has been out no one has made that pretty simple connection.

Kudos to you.
I noticed the apple thing right off the bat. Do I get a prize?!?!?!:rommie:

Get in mah belly!!!!

I don't recall Scotty distilling any homemade beverages in TOS. The closest thing I can think of was his 'repurposing' of McCoy's diluted Klingon nerve toxin in 'The Tholian Web' as a beverage.

that's it! :D
Hmmm...
SCOTT: What is it?
MCCOY: It's a diluted theragen derivative.
SPOCK: Theragen? A nerve gas used by the Klingons.
SCOTT: Aye. And deadly, too. What are you thinking of, Doc? Are you trying to kill us all?
SPOCK: If I remember correctly, it caused fatality only when used in pure form.
MCCOY: That's right, and in this derivative, mixed with alcohol, it merely deadens certain nerve inputs to the brain.
SCOTT: Oh, well, any decent brand of Scotch will do that.
MCCOY: One good slug of this, and you can hit a man with phaser stun, and he'd never feel it or even know it.
SCOTT: Does it make a good mix with Scotch?
MCCOY: It should.
SCOTT: I'll let you know. (leaves with the remaining contents of the flask)
MCCOY: Well, drink it down, Spock. It's the human thing to do. That's a medical order, Captain.

You know, it doesn't take much effort at all to imagine Pegg doing that scene. His "Ehm... yes. Can I get a towel please?" in response to Very Serious Spock is not so far removed from Doohan's shift from an alarmed "What are you thinking of, Doc? Are you trying to kill us all?" to a curious "Does it make a good mix with Scotch?" here.

We tend to look at these characters through rose colored glasses and tunnel vision and forget the stuff that doesn't fit our perceptions.

Pegg is not Doohan. So what? I thought he did just fine. A petition to replace him? That may just prove there IS actually more time in the universe than is necessary. Otherwise why waste it like that?
It's too late to replace him now. He has the role. One fear I have, however, his that he may very well be the "diva" one that want out the soonest and may jeopardise future productions.
Diva? Pegg? Utter bollocks.
Simon Pegg is a Star Trek fan. Yeah, he's one of us. I don't see him as a diva, rather as a Trek fan living his dream in this movie. :techman:

That's another issue. Being like us he has his own idea of Trek and would argue them just like we do. The other actors will follow what the director tells them too and keep then ensemble. Pegg seems like an outsider in this format.

Look, I don't hate the guy. He's funny and all. Even his performance was good I just didn't think it was scotty for me, and I don't see how he can change enough to be. He may be a Trek fan but that doesn't mean he always wanted to become stereotype to one character and unable to do other work like the previous crew did and like this crew will likely do too. He pretty much is only one with an actual movie carreer already, I don't think he wants to loose that.

It would of been much more in line if he bitched that he hadn't had a decent drop in months...now that would of been at least a remnant of Scotty that I could of recognized. Pegg's portrayal I'm not 100% on board with -- but I don't entirely hate it either. I understand this is supposed to be the "young" Scotty...but he just seems so amazed at everything and kind of manic and coked up...not the calm cool guy that we meet later in life..... who can handle himself in a crisis and do the "impossible".....

Well it is not hard to believe that after being stuck in a variety of dead-end postings Scotty becoming Chief Engineer on a top of the line Starship changed him, as well as giving him a lifelong loyalty to James Kirk.

Oh, come on. Simon Pegg was awesome. Scotty in TOS was funny as well, talk about selective memory:rolleyes:. The audience loved his humor as well. As for the implication of a fat joke, that is just silly. Anyone stuck at an outpost like that for a long time with only rations would be dreaming of real food as well.

Every character had funny stuff going on, it was part of the general feel of the show. But scotty wasn't a clowns. He could turn on a dime and be extremely serious when the situation was critical. But again, that's more a writting issue than a performance one.

Look, I didn't feel it, it's a personal thing. I'm not saying he sucked, I'm just saying he didn't make me feel the specific character of Scotty like other actors may have done theirs. I'm not saying we have to replace him, I just fear we might endup with having to replace him or kill off the character. And I do think that would be sad.

I understand that. I would just say give him another chance in the sequel. Hopefully he will have more screen time, and more of a chance to develop his character better.

Now that is utterly ridiculous...the petition thing...I mean come on, he wasn't THAT bad!

Ok....but you'll acknowledge that distilling and repurposing are not nearly the same thing....

It was Tony Verdeschi in Space:1999 that made his own concoctions.

I am sure if Pegg was that awful as Scotty, Chris Doohan would have backhanded him from the seat next to him in the transporter room.

yep, I'm gettin' old! the memory fails...

funny thing is, it's really Dr. McCoy who put that particular thought into Scotty's head. tells you the folks who think Bones is the real wino on the ship are more or less right ;)
