Spoilers Did Picard finally ''right the ship'' with Picard season 3?

Somehow I just know this answer is going to be the most pedantic thing I've ever heard.

I expect either a super pedantic nitpicky bit of obscurity that is sourced from some youtube video that goes on for three hours about something nonsensical

Or it'll be ignored or handwaved

The holodeck kind of blows away the whole "holographic display" argument out of the water, if its that. It just means holographic GUIs were used and then moved away from in favor of other design choices.

Interesting real world spaceflight example of that idea is the difference between the SpaceX Starliner capsule and the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. Starliner is very much classic airplane interface with lots of physical switches and individual readouts. CrewDragon is large touch screen interfaces. Both work, and I suppose you'd have to be an astronaut with experience using both to say which is better.

Sometimes a display technology seems advanced with all sorts of advantages, but it just doesn't catch on. Anyone browing trek bbs on their VR helmet right now? How about google-glass, or e-paper?

What technology does the Enterprise in SNW have in 2259/2260 that the Enterprise-D does not in 2365.

Its a simple question.
Time Lord technology where things are bigger on the inside than on the outside, because the writers have no sense of scale when it comes to writing anything having to do with a turbolift.

Droids ... that would have probably come in handy in a lot of situations where they needed something to do tasks and repairs in a dangerous environment ... like when the Enterprise-D was damaged in "Disaster."

Dozens of fighter craft that were used in one of the dumbest and messiest depictions of a "space battle" in the history of the franchise.

Maybe the reason is some of the drawbacks from some screens. My best friend had a big screen plasma tv many years ago, and while it looked great, we noticed it tends to get hot fairly quickly. I know he had to get it fixed once, and it was pricy. Plus, it was heavy.

I think some of those issues may be why they stopped selling in favor of the LCD tvs. (Or was it LED?)

That same philosophy could explain why certain things like viewscreens sticking around while holographic communication was tossed aside.

I will say that the scene in DISCO (I can't remember the name of the episode) with the inside of the turboshaft was just insanely ridiculous. It was like a Willy Wonka on acid ride. Impossibly large.

I was right...
I always love that when people want to complain about Picard's "magic son" and the Enterprise-D moving around inside of a Borg Super-Cube those are valid story concerns according to some.

But pointing out the stupidity of Discovery's season 2 story climax is being pedantic I guess.

Yup, that's all pretty dumb.

Thankfully, SNW has not repeated.

Honestly, I actually don't mind the droids since it makes sense Starfleet would have something like that in TOS-era (e.g., Harry Mudd had female androids, so...). But it's hard to reconcile their existence with a LOT of both TOS and the TNG-era.

Haha. I'll pass on that.
Yeah all the YouTube reviewers were 80% right. Why spend the time recreating the wheel?

And I'll pass on responding to follow up questions asked in bad faith, especially when everyone already knows it'll end with "well you just don't like it!".

Maybe we can talk about the WGA strike's potential impact on Legacy?

Time Lord technology

You know, I'll give you this one. It looked dumb on Discovery and it looked dumb on The Enterprise.

Best I can figure is they wanted something to look exciting and dynamic as opposed to a simple tube.

I think we only saw it on the Enterprise in that one Short Trek. I've always kinda figured they were just saving money by using the already created digital assets from Discovery.

Just because we never saw something, doesn't mean it never existed. It makes perfect sense to have some kinda automated repair system. Hell, they might not even be automated, they could be drones. We have those TODAY.

Dozens of fighter craft

I didn't care for those things either, but I didn't question their existence. There's absolutely nothing in the canon that says they couldn't have existed.

We weren't discussing the merits of that particular episode. We were discussing how apparently the 1701, as seen in Disco and SNW, had tech more advanced then that of the Enterprise-D, which it doesn't.

Eh, I don't find it hard as long as I don't take it as literal history. TNG states that the ship is largely self-cleaning and that has to be done somehow. DSC/SNW's crew compliment is about half (roughly-please don't come at me with exact numbers) of the TOS compliment so capacity for fighters, or other mission specific resources that would not be present during TOS.

And that's my biggest head canon, for want of a better term. The Enterprise and ships like it are very modular, allowing for mission specific profiles and equipment inside them.

Does it bother me? Eh, a little. Is it irreconcilable? No, not for me.

Mileage will vary.

I think the only thing people want is variety. Being told "one way" and "it's so popular!" basically is creating the division that is supposedly not wanted in the Trek fan base. It's absurd.

To clarify, I mean the criticisms of PICARD season 1.

Fair but what I'm seeing is the extreme reaction the other way.

Which, unfortunately is exactly what I would expect. Something is not welcomed with unamnimous praise so they rework it and rework it until they go back to the other side.

Bearing in mind that Stewart himself did not want Season 3's style at the beginning. So, if you want Season 3 you have to go back and convince Stewart that this is how it can be done.

Again, if season 1 was so successful, it wouldn't have been thrown out wholescale at the beginning of season 2. Season 2 is actually my second favorite season of NuTrek (yes, I don't like season 1 and the 23rd century reboots that much!). Just a shame Laris coming back in time with the group was vetoed by executive interference... and who knows what else?

People that like season 1 are welcome to like what they like. I'll criticize that season, but not the people who like it. But in making something a portion of the fanbase really loved while alienating many others, it forgot the forest for the trees. Season 3 forms a broader coalition of support. Some might call this populist, I call it small-d democratic in serving the wider fanbase. I don't think the season is perfect. I've criticized the individual episodes in their respective threads, and even gave the much loved 309 a 5/10. But for me and many others, this is the first live action that "feels like Star Trek" content we've gotten in 20 years.

I guess. I mean, I don't care about "success" as much as others. I want entertainment and characters I give a shit about, to be blunt. Season 1 was the first time I ever gave a shit about Picard as a character, and I was invested in Raffi, Elnor, and to a lesser extent Jurati and Rios. Season 2, while not good, definitely gave me a little more. Season 3 said some "F you!" to those characters, sadly, save for Raffi, whom I think was well served in this season.

Again, I'm glad to see the upswell of support. I will push back hard that I am to like it because it's popular. I won't silence that part of my brain for the populist argument. This season had the exact same issues as other newer Trek seasons, including mystery boxes (that people supposedly hate) and action that doesn't always make sense, but somehow this is "feels like Trek" level content? That I don't get. And I probably never will.

But, to be clear, I appreciate your clarity and articulation because at least I get where you are coming from. That goes a long way to helping me understand, even if I don't fully understand.

You know with absolutely certainly that had it been Discovery doing these things, they would be eviscerated by certain fans.

Indeed. So much of this season wouldn’t fly with a lot of fans if it was on Discovery. Pretending otherwise is just ignoring the obvious.

I also find it a bummer how much of the "we finally got Trek back" discourse alienates the fans of Discovery and the first two seasons of Picard, particularly the women and queer people. People in those groups asking questions in good faith and pointing out their genuine issues with this season on social media getting blocked by TM is not great, even though he can block whoever he pleases I suppose. The same people being swarmed by people calling themselves "real fans" basically saying "Eff what you liked about Trek cause real Trek is back" is just a bad look for me. It's all Trek whether you liked the first two season or not. Just cause it didn't feel like trek to you doesn't mean it didn't mean something to others. That I guess is a big part about what rubs me the wrong way with a lot of the praise and discourse around this season.
