Did anyone get a Windows 10 invite?

Ok this is not funny... my new drive was able to back up 50% of my computer and it's files before it screwed up due to either the USB ports themselves malfunctioning or a driver. So now onto seeing what I can do. It was an i/o device error I ran into.

Perfect timing. Considering I have to complete the back up before updating to 10.

It had been acting up before but I didn't think it was anything uber serious.

Cleaned out my USB ports to see if that might help any along with checking to see if any drivers needed to be updated and am trying to back up again. Hoping that that does the trick.

Does your current motherboard have USB3 on it? If not and there's potentially a problem with your current USB ports, look at getting an add in USB 3 card. Apart from the faster transfer rates, it will by-pass any dodgy USB ports on your motherboard.

Yes it does.

Had to clear the entire drive to get it to work properly... so I had to restart the backup again. It's the only way to get Windows 7 to work with 3tb drives or larger.

Fingers crossed this time.

Thanks. I have both my fingers and toes crossed.

Yeah I'm beginning to think the PIO or controller for your USB ports has died somewhat. Do they still use PIO chips?

Actually they haven't. It's backing up just fine now. Once I formatted the drive it's been acting normal. Been able to read normally. And the backup just ended. Got it done now.

As for the PIO, I checked that and it said it was working normally, after I had scanned it.

Out of curiosity though, how much does it cost to get those repaired?

More then a motherboard is worth, as they're usually part of larger chip that does other functions. Cheaper to replace the whole board

Well shit. There shoots that then. Can't spare around $200 or so.

Edit: Double checked one of the ports and it read my ipod fine. So it seems normal. Was able to sync like it usually does.

Hey just had this announce itself as an update

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2 x64 Edition - January 2016 (KB890830).

Failed to install click "retry" and it's stuck saying "Preparing to install"

Anyone else had this issue?

OH and wow 5 minutes after hanging on that screen it decides to install. Wonderful.. What stupid coding?

Its not an update, its a spyware/mallware removal tool which is updated/run each patch tuesday and yes it takes quite a while since its scanning your boot drive.

Hey if anyone knows the answer to this.

Why is the recovery partition bigger on my new drive then it was on my old drive yet it was the same version of Windows, same files, everything?

Previously used a 1tb drive and the recovery partition was 250mb but now I have a 2tb drive the recovery partition is 450mb in size.

Why is that?

Have you tried looking a web search first?

Remember - Google is your friend.

But it does seem that 450MB is the common size for the recovery partitions. I'm running Windows from a 120GB SDD and I have a 450MB partition.

The difference could be that if you've done a new install on the new drive where as your old one could have been a upgrade from a previous version of windows.

Ah, I didn't think of that. I did try to google but found lots of different answers. But your answer seems the most likely one as similar information did show up in google.

Hey guys can updates happen while you are using your computer?

I just noticed my taskbar twice reloading all the icons. Wondering if an update can cause this to happen, and how is it done that you can use the machine and it isn't crashing?

yes.

Just came across this dear piece of news tonight. So not happy right now. Thank god I changed my backup settings or else I'd be screwed. Onto backing my laptop up yet again. Thankfully we still have the choice, but I really don't want to upgrade to it at all.

It's likely that Windows 10 is already on your computer, waiting for the "go" sign to install.

Yea it probably is. At least with the switch in back up it probably just postponed things. I'll have to take my laptop in along with my mom's in to get it upgraded. Just not thrilled about losing any programs I don't want them to remove, on top of other issues. It just sounds like way more of a hassle than it's worth. Windows 7 is at least sane.

Well, Windows 10 is not likely to lose your data, and it should all transfer over fairly smoothly. I imagine the real issue is keeping it from doing so without your permission and oversight.

Honestly, with the way Microsoft is pushing Windows 10, I'd be surprised if anyone who owns Windows 7 or 8.1 will still have that OS by 2020 (Windows 7's End of Life support date). They're doing it by hook or by crook. Plus, what people with Windows 7 and 8.1 need to keep in mind is that even if Microsoft doesn't have you on Windows 10, they'll still be getting Windows 10 data with the patches that will and have been pushed through Windows 7 and 8.1's updates.

There are people who are showing others how to keep that from happening, but there will come a point when an update will be critical/required, and inside that patch will be all they need.

I upgraded to Windows 10 both ways. I did the upgrade on top of Windows 7 and that went smoothly, but I wanted to change more so wiped the drive and did a clean install, both options worked for me with minimal fuss. You can install over Windows 7 and keep files, programs, and settings.
