McDowall was my all-time favorite male actor of any nationality, partially due to the 1970s troika of APES, POSEIDON and HELL HOUSE. When his characters kick the bucket (the third APES, plus POSEIDON) it's as painful for us as it was for them. When he passed away in 1998 I was majorly bummed. When I heard the standing ovation he received at the Oscars Memoriam the following year, I was supremely gratified. The applause was so massive the Oscars later decided to omit the sound in later years in order not to denigrate lesser-known individuals.
