Design vs Character: Jar jar.

I would have liked it better if Jar-Jar had started out as the goofy prat we know him as but slowly became a competent Jedi. In TPM he could have had his last big screw-up which forced him to reflect and get serious about in things. In the end he would be a quirky Jedi odd-ball who can also fight in a badass style and get bussiness done.

Why have Jar-Jar be a Jedi? To inject a litte bit of life into the Jedi. All of them were so serious and devoid of personality it would have been nice for one of them to still retain a sense of humour. Kudos to Obi-Wan for still being capable of empathy.
I remember an old conversation about the Jedi Order seen during the prequels hadn't always been so institutionalized and conservative, but that the last Sith War drove them in that direction.

what made you hate him? if he was a different character but the same design, would you still hate him? i think if he was played as a criminal, shade of han solo, and he would have been a cool character, funny but diffrent, what do you think, what sucks about Jar jar? design or character?

Everytime I see that absurd idiot, Jar Jar I hear Cybermen saying "DELETE!, DELETE!"

I think it would be wonderful if on DVD they released a special Jar Jar less cut, with him digitally removed entirely from the movie. A little additional nip and tuck editing after that with certain scenes, and youve immediately improved the movie by a leap and a bound. Possibly the worst character ever created. He's in the running at least.

Trading him in for a different character who happened to look the same is fine. Its not the look, or the name. Its the character.

See I didn't mind Jar-Jar the character, just how he was used. Taking him into town on Tattooine was painfully stupid, but I guess if you didn't do that he would have been in a lot less of the movie - oh no!

The Goooongan accents were vaguely West Indian, but not so much that I think it's fair to call it racist. The Trade Federation wankers though, well, I could see people being offended by that. All those guys needed was round glasses and buck teeth to complete the stereotype.

I thought both Jar-Jar and the trade federation where poorly hid Stereotypes. And this comes from a very politically incorrect...

And in the end when he went from being banished to being a *general*!?

Kind of like how Lando went from turning over Leia and Han to Vader to becoming an Alliance general.

Hmm, interesting point. It seems George Lucas has a thing for quick ascension through the ranks. ;)

Lando was a shady character (more like Han, really), but he did have leadership experience through his time at Cloud City. He also was cunning and able to strategize. The Rebellion wasn't a true army, they were more of an eclectic band of self-trained freedom fighters.

Jar Jar had nothing. No skills, no experience, no charisma, not even raw talent, yet he was sent out to "lead" a formal army. Whatever.
