Defiance Season 2 Discussion

We saw Tommy and Irisa doing it last year, and we saw Irisa getting pissy when she saw Tommy and Berlin macking this season.

They look like sperms from up here, but unfortunately they qualify as adults who deserve adult relationships that we want to watch in detail glom together and/or fall apart.

Despite your denial, this is happening, and it's a little hot.

Dude, Stephanie Leonidas (Irisa) is 30 and Ana Hopkins (Berlin) is 27. I couldn't find an age for Dewshane Williams (Tommy) but I would be shocked if he was more than 4 or 5 years younger than Ana. They're not kids.

The actors are not kids.

The characters are considerably younger than the actors playing them.

Although Berlin has an important job and acts with authority like an adult.

I got no problem with Berlin.

But Tommy was a boy with a massive shot gun overcompensating for his insecurities about either his age or a tiny penis, following Sheriff 1 and then Sheriff 2 around last year like he was their ball boy or something. Apprentice in training, whatever, but even the word "apprentice" does not scream adult.

Meanwhile Arisa still lives at home, and Nolan treats her like she's 12 on a fishing trip so when they are together she seems like a 12 year old on a fishing trip.

Irisa was born in 2024 on Earth. In early 2031 Irisa was in Denver where her parents joined an Idaka Church after being told that Irisa was Alakta, the "devouring mother",
The story begins in the year 2046: Earth has been radically transformed,
Which makes Irisa 22 when the show started, 7 years younger than the actress.

Besides, my quote that you drew from "the view from up here" is saying that we ourselves are really old, approaching 50 old, and as I say that, there are many boardmembers here who think back fondly with revere to the childlike enthusiasm and energy they had last century when they were in their 50s... ;)

To a 53 year old, a 22 year old is a sperm.

Okay this is ticking ALL my boxes now. Politics. Intrigue. Soap Opera. Gay Alien Sex.

What IS e-rep guy up to with the good doc?

We haven't seen too many Indogenes in this show, there was betrayal guy that's the only one I can remember well. So I liked seeing the doc's ghost lover because she was so different than the doc. It emphasized that the doc's deadpan, assholish, intellect mannerisms are hers and not some default race characteristic like you get in so many sci fi shows.

That said, the Irathient brothel boy that Datak kissed looked like a Klingon.

And great scene..

So. Very. Uncomfortable.

I was worried when the episode began that we were getting a preachy "drugs are bad, mmmkay?" type episode but thankfully by the end it turned into something a lot more interesting and unexpected. I was almost taken in with the twist involving Yewll's lover. While I did figure out what she really was, it wasn't until a minute or so before it was revealed that I pieced everything together.

The subplot with Rafe staying at the Tarr residence was great and his bath tub scene with Stahma was totally the highlight of the episode.

Christy's complaint that she still feels like an outsider in the Tarr family feels somewhat out of the blue. This could have been helped had they actually given her more to do so far this season. As it is, she usually has one scene per episode, and aside from revealing she's pregnant nothing important has really happened involving her. Yes, we have seen in those episodes that she does seem uncomfortable among the Tarrs, and that could be because she doesn't feel she fits in, but the actual revelation of that just feels out of place.

The storyline they seem to be setting up with the Votanis Collective maybe making a play for Defiance certainly looks interesting, and I do enjoy the scene near the end with Datak proposing an alliance with Rafe. Although kind of predictable those two would end up working together, and indeed I believe someone in this thread even suggested it last week, it's still an exciting plot development and one I look forward to seeing how it plays out.

I like also that they established that she deliberately learned "idiomatic" human speech patterns in order to put her human "patients" more at ease.

So, did she figure out that Humans like asshole Doctors after watching a couple seasons of House, or has she retired her good bedside manner after the girlfriend opened up her wrists?

She takes her cues from Earth's most celebrated physician: Doctor Leonard McCoy.

Well, her own husband fussed at her that she was so HUMAN sometimes. Bathing with her nearly naked mother-in-law who practically shoved her ta-tas in Christy's face, and the way Datak made his way back into the house were just a few examples of her struggles with the Casti customs and lifestyle

It's the fact that she can't say no without it reverberating forever in their view of her. And it's not like they have their own life, her husband's and now her life are completely interwoven with his family in a very small town. Every time she might want to not be Casti it has negative repercussions. They are people fiercly trying to preserve what they have irrevocably lost, their own children are wandering off into mixed cultures. They are not going to be interested in diluting anything for a human.

I had to refuse my own nude (same sex) family bathing with my Korean relatives! "You'll love it, it's wonderful, it's fantastic, everyone loves to go to the bathing houses, it's.." No. Now maybe if I was dependent on them and if it was a grave insult rather than just an unpleasantry to say no I would have to go, and I would do it in that situation.

Christie just has no power. All she can do is storm out and come crawling back.

I still think it's weird how in the changing shed at he public pools that "we" all get naked in front of strangers and family and it doesn't matter.

It almost makes me wonder if these sheds were at single sex swimming pools, if this shameless nudity could continue into the bathing area?

Lets just call this first step "phase one".

I get changed in the loo. But I see a lot of things on the way to the loo through the public changing rooms that are rather ! As in, you would wrap yourself in a towel if you left the shower at your home but you are happy to stand around naked with people in the changing room?

There are several cultures where nude bathing or saunas are totally normal.

There are less cultures in the world every day?

Another hundred years and every one will be American.

Okay.

Sorry.

200 years.

Half way through that rant I started flashbacking on the half dozen Daily Shows I saw this morning panicking about the Middle East. America is going to be dust before that part of the world gets its shit together.

Although I may have already urged you to watch Tyrant because of Alice krige's involvement?

Son of an Arabian Dictator, living (hiding) in America for the last 20 years, returns home for a wedding, as his father dies and hands power over to insane sex mad cocaine fuelled recently mostly castrated during an assassination attempt, brother, and tries to become the voice of moderation as everything spins a little more out of control every week.

Blunt, simple, but strongly worded.

Nah, Firefly got it right. Its going to be a mix of western and eastern cultures. Where I'm born, Singapore, its been happening for the past 2 centuries. We have our own pig language that uses a mixture of words and grammar from English, Chinese, various Chinese dialects, Malay and Indian. Its the same with the food here, best elements of each culture fused together creating something unique.
