Defiance Season 2 Discussion

Starbucks is practically out of business in Australia.

HAHAHAHAHAH I laugh at its downfall!!

But yeah, most food is asian. YAY. Because pre this food revolution most food was english and that was soooo not yay.

Because they are american Starbucks has the A/C cranked up real high which is occasionally a plus.

Hey is Defiance going to have winter? Where is the snow? Has the weather changed drastically and there is no snow?

I was worried when the episode began that we were getting a preachy "drugs are bad, mmmkay?" type episode but thankfully by the end it turned into something a lot more interesting and unexpected. I was almost taken in with the twist involving Yewll's lover. While I did figure out what she really was, it wasn't until a minute or so before it was revealed that I pieced everything together.

The subplot with Rafe staying at the Tarr residence was great and his bath tub scene with Stahma was totally the highlight of the episode.

Christy's complaint that she still feels like an outsider in the Tarr family feels somewhat out of the blue. This could have been helped had they actually given her more to do so far this season. As it is, she usually has one scene per episode, and aside from revealing she's pregnant nothing important has really happened involving her. Yes, we have seen in those episodes that she does seem uncomfortable among the Tarrs, and that could be because she doesn't feel she fits in, but the actual revelation of that just feels out of place.

The storyline they seem to be setting up with the Votanis Collective maybe making a play for Defiance certainly looks interesting, and I do enjoy the scene near the end with Datak proposing an alliance with Rafe. Although kind of predictable those two would end up working together, and indeed I believe someone in this thread even suggested it last week, it's still an exciting plot development and one I look forward to seeing how it plays out.

I think my personal favorite was the doctor's snark while she was bandaging Datak's wounds. :rommie:

This was a good one.
The scene with Rafe and Stahma in the baths was great. I also loved Datak's reaction when he saw Rafe living in the house. I love that they are going to be working together. That should be fun.
I kind of assumed from the beginning of the drug story that it was Pottinger, but it was still a good story IMO, even if that part was predictable. I don't think I've mentioned yet how glad I am that Nolan and Amanda are together. I prefer when they actually get people like them together quickly, instead of dragging the will they won't they on forever.

Are they still together? After her drugged vision, she won't let Nolan touch her and she thinks that Pottinger is simpatico.

I just saw it tonight and really liked it. This was probably the best episode of the season yet. It's got contrasting elements of humor and drama. The Tarr family dynamics and most scenes with Datak were pretty funny, filled with sarcasm and biting humor.

Datak: Do I look insincere to you?
Rafe: Your face is just designed that way.

On a more serious note, Amanda's hallucinations became quite the concern for Nolan and others. I wasn't clear on what caused them ... Was it the device that Doc Yewll secretly implanted to collect memories, or the effects of the Adreno on the device? Pottinger appeared to manifest the same symptoms (or ego) when he confronted the "ghost" of Amanda's ex. Am I right in interpreting Pottinger had a homoerotic fascination with the guy? Even Doc Yewll got a visit from a former lover and associate of hers - another Indogene female, in fact - and she was reminded of her place in Defiance to help atone for her misdeeds during the war.

So we've learned Votans and humans aren't all that different in terms of choosing their partners regardless of gender. ;) Seeing Datak kiss an Irathient man shouldn't have come as a surprise, considering Stahma and Kenya had had a secret thing going for some time.

The device proliferates as a Nanite or Nanite colony.

Leakage/spillage caused unforeseen crosspolination into the Doc and the new Mayor.

The Doc you will remember is only out of jail on the mayor's whimsy.

Is he playing a longer game with Amanda, or has this all been about controlling his "girlfriend"?

Datak and Rafe aligning to take down e-rep is going to be excellent. Very unlikely bed buddies = win.

I didn't quite understand the implants. Yewll, Amanda and Pottinger all have them, Amanda and Pottinger's were implanted by Yewll? I understand to gain information from Amanda but why did Pottinger have one? Why did Yewll have one? At first I thought this was just stuff that got implanted during the Pale wars that went wonky.

Apparently, the implants are meant to be implanted under sterile conditions to avoid accidental leakage or contamination--as opposed to Defiance's crude frontier facilities. Some nanotech particles got loose while Yewl and the Mayor were performing the procedure on Amanda, and the microscopic particles infected them without their knowledge. They then replicated inside Yewl and the Mayor to create new implants.

To use Trek lingo, imagine some Borg nanoprobes accidentally infecting Janeway while the Doctor was performing some delicate procedure on Seven under less than sterile conditions . . ..

And their essentially knockoffs anyway, thereby carrying more potential risk compared to the original tech. Here's an interesting interview with Yewll's actress, Trenna Keating, about her role on Defiance.

Ahhh. Yes I get that now, though why did everyone end up with them in the back of the neck? Programmed to travel to the neck? Okay maybe there is some spine thing they align themselves with.

So any speculation on what info Yewll and Pottinger want from Amanda?

And HEY! Maybe this means all that perving Potty is doing on Amanda is about more than being a deviant.

You know the hairbrush deal, how he took Amanda's ex's hair and it comes across as stalkerboy lusting after Amanda's ex? Maybe it's something totally different, maybe it's all about DNA.

The ex and the mayor were schoolfriends, and lovers.

Is that right?

I might be mixing up this super gay programming with other super gay programming.

(I like super gay programming.)

(Just looked at the scene again.)

Mayor Niles was a couple years younger than Connor at School, where he was super gay for Connor. English schoolboys, it is to be expected, except that Connor isn't English. But you know when you start out at school how the big kids seem awesome and larger than life and unbelievably sexy even though they're children too and you're just too young and stupid to math that out? That. Also the week before Pottinger told a story to Amanda about hiding in a church at the school with a lot of other boys, waiting for the Voltans to murder them all... This week we find that Connor was there in the church with Niles where the elder boy had a moment of kindness and "held" Pottinger while he weeped in the dark waiting to be killed.

But of course they somehow barely survived. :)

Since then Pottinger has been stalking Connor, followed him to New York, gave him a old timey watch and it is probably why... Golly.

Niles loves Connor.

Amanda has memories of fucking Connor.

Niles can now implant memories into his brain of being fucked by Connor, so that in retrospect he can believe that he finally did have the sex with the man he loves even though he's a deadman with no overt interest in cock that we were aware of?

Although...

Pottinger had a few one frame flash backs of being vivisected by Indogene that night in the church, like how Tyler Durden would splice porn into Bambi at his local theatre.

Something wiggy happened and Yewll might have the ability to control him that she is using or is not using.

Hell. Pottinger could even be another Indogene sleeper, but with false memories so that he does not accidentially tip off his true identity.

These things happen.

I did think he might be a sleeper.

If it was just to satisfy his dead man lust he would have had to pay or bargain away an awful lot for Yewll to do it.

And I'm assuming that Potty is the one who raped Amanda? Why? Because, soap opera? Remember how shocked he is when he hears it resulted in a pregnancy?

Possible but yes, way too soap operary.

He doesn't have to do shit to get Yewll to do anything.

If Pots blinks twice, she's back in that muddy jail he only released her from to do dodgy shit for him with super magic alien science.

But yes, if Amanda killed his son, then it's possible vengeance might trump his need for orgasms.

But his Yewll-centric plans were put into play before he found out about Connor.

Am I to assume that the device in the back of the neck was a collection of nannites? I thought Yewll implanted herself, Pottinger, and Amanda with the devices because Pottinger wanted to spy on Amanda, and the implants would've provided a three-way link between them. I also thought the cross-contamination resulted in the three having hallucinations.

I'm willing to entertain the notion that Pottinger could have bisexual urges (formerly for Connor and now for Amanda). I swear that guy could pass for Robert Downey Jr.
