Deck Plan Generations...and Bowling Alleys

You may find this of interest. Roddenberry.com is offering a model kit of the TOS phaser rifle. The best part is that you can download a full colour pdf of the assembly manual. Lots of nice close up shots. It's a replica but it may give you some ideas.

I'm thinking that the stock maybe three cylinders with space for the power packs to snap in. Maybe? Maybe not? It would be interesting to combine the two phaser ideas.

They may very well have cannibalized that puppy for the sake of the later version, but I don't see how much of it could've been incorporated into the desired concept.

Maybe the snow shovel handle for the shoulder stock...maybe the barrel and emitter...

I'm of two minds regarding the shoulder stock and the extra power packs. On the one hand, they could slip inside a sturdier structure, like super powerful Duracells, but then you lose the visual effect of stacking the suckers and the link with the pistol grip, along with the portability factor and being able to pull out all these parts and assemble the thing lickity split.

Decisions, decisions...

Getting back to that original Jefferies design drawing...

Well, I tried to clean up that pic to make it legible (it's impossible), so I spent some time in Barnes & Noble the other day and did a quick tracing of that drawing in "Star Trek 365", where it's much more legible.

Rather than scan my crude tracing, I transcribed the relevant notations to something more refined...

Looking at that Jefferies-drawing and considering what that power pack/handle is supposed to do, I think that handle should be round.

A round handle, like the misguided attempt in the Kelvin scenes in your oh-so-favorite movie of all freakin' time, would make aiming a bit problematic since you can never be sure you're holding right until you press the trigger (by which time, it's too late), not to mention being certain that the power pack is properly installed, as well as giving the impression that the thing was just thrown together with random parts from the hardware store.

A round handle serves one purpose, to provide something to hold onto. The pistol grip of a weapon has to be a bit more refined.

CRA, you seem to have got the essentials of MJ's sketch pretty good, but just in case you're interested, page 92 and 93 of the Star Trek Sketch Book (TOS) has a large pic of it, though the middle is buried in the creese of the spine but most of the other details and text are very legible.

That would explain why he's shooting himself in the foot all the time. :rommie:

Then why does the Jefferies-drawing present a round handle?

Yeah, I don't get all this "round" talk either. The handle of the phaser was definitely no just a cylinder.

For the record, I've never been a fan of the idea of the bowling alley being under the hangar deck. And as time has passed, I'm now of the opinion that the bowling alley that Riley referred to is just one of the various programs in the ship's holodeck.

^^So you need to reserve a minimum room of 80'x5' for a one lane bowling alley. Torpedo room perhaps? :D

The more attentive here may have noticed the addition of a CafePress Shop link to my sig line. For the moment, the only product is a recreation of the classic "Property of Klingon Rollerball Team" t-shirt (or at least will be, as soon as I can get the system to cooperate), but I'm playing with some ideas that tie in to this project.
