Decanonization Time!

Obviously you need to decanonize Amok Time. Vulcan is not depicted as a conquered world as it was stated to be in The Conscience of the King. I will not tolerate such a flagrant disregard for canon, continuity and Gene's Vision. I have spoken, so say we all.

;)

The augment virus, "The Chase".

Ridiculous hokum to justify in-universe the out-of-universe theatrical, pragmatic necessity of employing human actors and to analyze their makeup on the wrong side of the fourth wall.

If I had a decanonizer, I would hose down all that garbage with it.

What does "decanonize" even mean? Are we supposed to just pretend the episodes don't exist? Are they to be withdrawn from circulation? Deleted from the DVD sets? Have an asterisk placed next to the title in episodes guides?

I resist the idea of "decanonization" -- in part because it plays into the modern notion that "canon" is all-important. And that the quality of an episode somehow determines how "canon" it is.

I'm sorry. "The Alternative Factor" is just as canon as "City on the Edge of Forever."

And we can't rewrite history to pretend we never watched it.

Everyone....

Why has no one mentioned Crusher getting it on with a space ghost? Surely we can handle humans evolving into lizards and Andy Dick over....

No, wait, never mind.... I want to keep Message in a Bottle but simply decanonize Andy Dick.

It was just meant to be a tongue-in-cheek thread because so many folks seemed wound up about canon to ridiculous degrees.

Indeed. It's insane how people can literally get upset because of a difference in appearance of a made up alien species. And not just that.... Spend hours debating it online, or back in the, fanzines. Not for fun, but for real. As in, they consider it AS important or more than real life political and social issues.

I think some discussions about canon and the universe can be interesting. But I'm tired of one side antagonizing the other. I'd rather compare notes and possibly see where my thinking could be adjusted.

I mean, there are a couple that I wouldn't object to getting that treatment.

I have taken this thread to just be a bit of fun, with no one seriously arguing that any part of Trek should be "de-canonized." However, if you want a serious answer, in my mind de-canonizing something just means that future productions no longer treat it as having happened. An example of that would be Superman Returns, where it was tied in directly to the Christopher Reeve-era Superman films, but treated III and IV as though they didn't exist and picked up after II. De-canonization only has to do with the parameters for future stories. It is not anyone's attempt to pretend earlier productions don't exist or refusing to make them available any longer.

Well, we *can*. I mean, we can pretend anything we want. That doesn't mean we should, though.

Then again, I'm one of those who thinks "City of the Edge of Forever" is overrated, but also actually likes "Spock's Brain," so take my opinions for what they're worth.

That is what we really need AI for. Just unperson him from the episode. Or take an episode like The Deadly Years and AI the actors faces when they really were elderly onto the ep.
