I would agree, if that episode did not have some of the only real consequences that any episode of Voyager ever had.

Yeah, Message in a Bottle is a very important episode in Voyager lore. It leads to Voyager reestablishing contact with Starfleet and it introduces the Hirogen. Like it or not, it has to stay canon.

It also has great moments with several characters.
The Romulan characters are fun too.
And the Prometheus is a gorgeous ship.

In my head canon I assume the EMH Mark 2 was the LMH that Bashir was selected to be the template for on DS9, until Zimmerman rejected him due to being genetically enhanced. Doctor Andy Dick was the runner-up.

I try to overlook the fact this theory means there is an actual doctor in Starfleet played by Andy Dick.

Perhaps the shenans with Bashir convinced them to no longer use a real person template for the holograms.

Plus the holodick was replaced by the mark 3 and then the mark 4 over the span of like 2 years so he was clearly not up to the task. I believe in beta canon somewhere the 3 was introduced with upgraded security features and was designed to be a doctor in a time of war with the 4 being it back to a peacetime doctor.

TNG. What if they ended up doing the original movie plan, use Saavik and David as the "Next Generation" and have them take over the movie franchise...

my favorite fork would be similar. No TNG. 1986, the "A" launches. 1987, the new series starts. TOS crew on the "A", plus the TNG archetypes. Kirk dealing with the Android, the Klingon and the Cadet, in context of everything he's been through. A Klingon, after David? Cadets, after Preston and the events of Khan? Can still do the Decker/Ilia composites and the Blind Pilot. Nimoy, Kelley and Doohan retire after a season or two, letting the TNG-lite cast move up. Uhura becomes 1st or 2nd officer. Chekov and "Worf" at tactical / security. Sulu still gets the Excelsior and a lifetime of complaints. Variants of the last 2 movies happen as episode-events. Shatner gets to chew scenery when The Best of Both Worlds happens. It would be glorious.
