DC to REBOOT???

I've never gotten that name, anyway. "Nightwing?" I remember when Superman was "Nightwing" in Kandor, a name transparently manufactured to address the general lack of bats indigenous to Krypton.

Yeah, I always thought Nightwing sounded just very "generic superhero".

Then again, at least he didn't get saddled with RedRobin. Poor name and a stupid looking costume.

I haven't read too much of the current Batman stuff, but I kind of liked the current idea of Bruce and Dick alternating in the role. Mostly for it's novelty, I suppose.

Not sure I like the idea of Babs back as Batgirl. I mean sure, she's awesome, but Babs as Oracle is extremely well-established now. Plus, what's that gonna do to Birds of Prey?

Birds of Prey is getting a new number one...without Gail Simone writing it? Bruce and Dick weren't alternating as Batman, they were both Batman. One was based in Gotham and on the Justice League (Dick) while Bruce was global recruiting for Batman, Inc.

There will be new "Batgirl" and "Nightwing" #1's as well. It looks like Babs will be back as Batgirl. I'm guessing Dick will return to being Nightwing which will be a shame.

Barbara Gordon as Batgirl < Barbara Gordon as Oracle

I was excited about an Aquaman #1 after the Brightest Day saga but my excitement has been tempered with this nonsense that DC is pulling.

This is more of a jumping off point for me, as far as monthlies are concerened.

Good luck DC getting that 14yr old to buy 8-10 books at $3 a pop when he can get a video game instead.

I understand that there is an editorial edict for the DC Comics superlaunch that their female superheroes wear more… practical clothing. So Wonder Woman gets to keep her trousers. But the likes of Supergirl will be redesigned so they aren’t running around in a little skirt flashing their panties at every available opportunity either. Female superhero characters will have their legs covered.

Guess that makes sense.

The more I read about all this, the better I like it - it'll certainly be interesting to see how Superman evolves, though I suspect when all is said and done Supes, Batman and GL will change less (other than in appearence) than it may seem at first.

I do hope the reboot (or whatever it ends up being) won't mess too much with the legacy characters. One of my favourite things about DC is the different generations within each family. In the Batclan especially, I love the difference in history and experience between Bruce, then Dick and Babs and Jason, then Tim and Cass and Stephanie, and now Damian. I'd hate to lose that.

On the age front, I'm also a bit worried about how young Diana and Clark look on that cover. Could just be the art, but I hope 'appealing to a new audience' doesn't have to mean de-aging the first and second gen heroes.

(I know actual ages are magic and weird in comic universes. But I don't think the big three should ever feel like they're in their early twenties. YMMV).

It evidently does involve "de-aging" them to some degree, but that's not ultimately too important - for god's sake, how old is Peter Parker now, and he's got nearly fifty years of "life experience."

Comic book characters are effectively immortal, whether they cease aging physically at twenty-five or thirty-five.

The average age of television and movie leads must have declined by at least ten years during my lifetime, so it's reasonable that comic book characters would follow suit.

^ Interestingly that is one of the reasons put forth by Marvel when they were explaining One More Day is they felt Peter had become "too old" and younger audiences were unable to relate to a married man with "responsibilities". Plus Joe Q was a fan of the 70's "hard luck Parker" so that went into the decision as well.

It's worth noting that the Kandorian Hero Nightwing was what inspired Dick to take on that name. He wanted to distinguish himself from his mentor and honor Superman whom he's always been a big fan of. There was an issue I think of Superman/Batman or maybe it was a back up story recently where it was retconned that Dick and Clark had a conversion when Dick was making the decision and he received Clark's blessing to take them. Nightwing and Flamebird also surfaced as Chris Kent and another Kryptonian character whose name fails me at the moment.

^ I did say that I know comic book characters ages can never make real-world sense. But a Wonder Woman who's permenantly sort of somewhere around thirty feels very different to an early-twenties Wonder Woman, even if they're both versions of a character who's actually been around for 70 years.

I'm choosing to believe the Babs-as-Batgirl thing isn't true, on the grounds that Bleedingcool was wrong about Nicieza writing the new TT book.

This is the first piece I've seen that really addresses the obvious here - that the launch of digital day-and-date is the big deal, and the announcement of a reboot-to-#1 mainly a way of attracting attention to the shift and marketing it:

...the decision to relaunch every title with a new #1 is inextricably linked to the decision to move all superhero publishing to digital. While it's easy to view it as a cynical attempt to grab new readers with a false "start," or say that they're throwing away decades of publishing history for a quick buck, consider that the new #1s represent not only a reboot of continuity, but a reboot of the publishing model. They're drawing a clean break not for the people coming into the stores, but for the much hoped-for new readers who will soon be following the entire DC Universe on their iPads and GalaxyTabs.

Make no mistake, this entire endeavor is focused on the digital market. DC isn't dumb. They know print is dying. They know they have no chance at beating Marvel in the print market, as years and years of examples have proven. Rejuvenating the characters (literally) and providing a fresh start all across the line isn't about a quick sales bump in the direct market; it isn't about the direct market at all. It's so that people logging into comiXology to check out these digital DC comics they've heard about don't see an issue number in the 900s after Action Comics and throw up their hands.

With regards to the continuity reboot, I doubt it will be as complete as people fear. The August DC solicitations promise too many continuations, and they definitely knew this was in the work. Solicitations for titles like War of the Green Lanterns: Aftermath and T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents promise more to come; Batman Incorporated #10 is concluding on a "surprise ending." In an interview with USA Today, Dan DiDio stated that while roughly three-quarters of titles will see a creative team switch-up, one quarter -- the books that are working -- won't be touched by the reboot.

There's no conceivable reason to mess with high-selling moneymakers like Batman Incorporated, Green Lantern, Batman: The Dark Knight and, well, other Batman titles, and to do so would be a huge mistake, especially since Grant Morrison's major Leviathan uber-arc is, alongside Geoff Johns's Green Lantern, the only major DC title with ongoing stories continuing past August. The Superman and Wonder Woman franchises, on the other hand, are in desperate need of a shake-up. J. Michael Straczynski absolutely murdered any narrative momentum those books may have had before.

Italics mine.

digital day and date is a great move, LONG overdue.

Monthly comics are too short and too far apart to be a real force in sales anymore anyways. they are far more suited to digital sales on tablets and the like.

I'm glad DC is showing no fear of upsetting the "comic shop pull list" crowd and just flat out doing what needs to be done. Print is drastically down in every media, from newspapers to book sales to magazines. I'm impressed that DC is being so forward looking (I know, it's not really that impressive at all comparing it to other mediums, but in the nostalgia-driven world of comics it still sticks out, dramatically).

If it were me, the next step would be trying to get these comics (subscriptions and all) sold on the "iBooks" store and the Nook/Amazon store with automatic digital delivery

I'm fine with having Cyborg as part of the team, but how is giving the suits extra lines around the forearms and heads making them more modern?
I'm more disturbed by the idea that Green Lantern isn't wearing a ring and the "power" seems to be originating from his crotch...
