Too many creators, too many fans turned pro have the character anchored to one moment in time and can't think or imagine beyond that.
...and that is why MoS worked--it treated the character as he would be in a more realistic world, and how people would see an all-powerful alien running around. The last kind of interpretation the movies needed was another version of Donner's film (which I love, but it does not need to continue speaking for the character), or worse, someone on such a nostalgia trip that they take direct inspiration from the George Reeves series.
And if either JJ Abrams or Matthew Vaughn get assigned to the next Superman movie. Both have already singled a return to the Donner interpretation.
Abrams having anything to do with Superman is a horrifying idea.
