DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

Too many creators, too many fans turned pro have the character anchored to one moment in time and can't think or imagine beyond that.

...and that is why MoS worked--it treated the character as he would be in a more realistic world, and how people would see an all-powerful alien running around. The last kind of interpretation the movies needed was another version of Donner's film (which I love, but it does not need to continue speaking for the character), or worse, someone on such a nostalgia trip that they take direct inspiration from the George Reeves series.

And if either JJ Abrams or Matthew Vaughn get assigned to the next Superman movie. Both have already singled a return to the Donner interpretation.

Abrams having anything to do with Superman is a horrifying idea.

It’s ironic, I’m old enough to remember when Abrams’ Superman script (called Fly By), some years before Singer’s involvement) caused controversy on t’internet (Krypton survived, Lex was a salesman who was possessed by a Kryptonian called Luth-Or) and now here we are again.

Holy Patience Phillips, Batman! :wtf:

Yeah, all of that sounds pretty horrific. Here's hoping he takes a more traditional approach if he catches the Superman ball again.

Abrams' treatment also had Jor-El being responsible for destroying Krypton, I recall. Supposed motivation for Clark to be a hero on Earth. Since his Kryptonian father was now it's greatest villain. Take that Zod and Brainiac, I suppose

SMH

If Abrams had gotten his way back then, people would've flipped harder than they have now.

So am I the only person here who actually liked Justice League?
I enjoyed it, definitely more than either MoS or BvS which I did not enjoy on any level. Personally, I go the opposite way from most people here, I would have loved to have seen the full Joss Whedon version of that movie.

The casting and setup just wasn't right for Whedon's style. WB went all in with Snyder, and should have followed through.

As far as the Justice League goes? Momoa proved he could do a lighter take with Aquaman; Affleck was GREAT as Batman in JL giving him a wry sense of humor; Gadot was fine, I mean she did the Fast and Furious movies which have a lighter tone; Ezra Miller's manic energy was great; so that leaves Cavill and Fisher, both of which I'm confident Joss could have pulled a good performance out of.

Affleck started talking about exiting right after JL. My take is that he didn't want to act in an MCU style movie. He was promised Snyder and he didn't want Whedon. The Batman we got in that movie was very very hard to imagine being the same Batman from BvS. It was universe-breaking.

Next thing you know - it would have starred Nicholas Cage as Superman... ;)

I kind of enjoyed it. The plot was dumb and I didn't care for the Snyderesque action bits, but I enjoyed the character work. It was the first DCEU film other than Wonder Woman that I would be willing to watch again (and indeed I watched it twice when I borrowed it from the library).

I recommend giving BvS extended cut a try. It doesn't change the movie, but it at least does things to make it make more sense.

It's a mess, but a fairly entertaining one, with some enjoyable performances. In particular, Gadot couldn't be anything less than awesome as Diana if she tried. The Themyscira sequence and the League's battle with Superman are pretty great setpieces -- and I gather they are among the elements that remain largely Snyder's. And the brisk runtime ensures it doesn't bore.

Unfortunately, one of my favorite things about the DCEU, Amy Adams's Lois Lane, is poorly served by Whedon's rewrite. And the obvious effort to rehabilitate Snyderman doesn't really work for me either, because Cavill still comes off as a bit of a stiff, even as the script tries to make him more folksy and fun.

(And speaking of Adams, I've been looking for an opportunity to repost this excellent bit of commentary I ran across, courtesy of "Iceman" on the NeoGAF forums: "Amy Adams is probably the strongest part of MoS/BvS. She's the absolute center of the franchise; the most believable thing on screen in any scene. And she's fighting an uphill battle making us believe that mopey, self-centered Superman is someone we should care about. That's what she's been doing as an actress, DESPITE her role (as written). Plus she's super hot.")
