DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

I'm curious, wouldn't this be seen as a huge downgrade? According to wikipedia he's directed all three John Wick movies, which are well known and really well liked (and profitable). Now he's the b-director/stunt cordinator on a shitty Margot robbie vanity project. I get that the three John Wick movies are apparently his only directing credits, but those are three impressive credits, its not like he's been directing failed TV movies or something like that. He's gone from directing a (at this point) well loved action movie franchise to being support on the DCEU's version of After Earth (but with less talented actors). I get that he did a lot of second unit/stunt work before JW 1, but this feels like he's being downgraded.

Hopefully this is a job he's doing to open the door to better things, because even as someone who just thinks that the JW movies are ok, I think the director deserves better then this.

Then again, the guy was apparently the body double replacement for Brandon Lee on The Crow, so I suppose working on a shitty vanity project comic book film will still be a better experience then his last comic book film (to be clear, I like The Crow film, but I doubt it was fun doing the job he had on it).

This "shitty vanity project" will probably make as much as 2 John wick movies put together. And worldwide gross can top all 3.

John Wick-Director Chad Stahelski hired as Second-Unit Director on Birds of Prey.

A huge chunk of his job will be to shoot action scenes. Good move, WB.
Looking at Cathy Yan's filmography it looks like she doesn't have any experience with these kinds of big budget action movies, so I can see bringing a more experienced director to help with the action scenes. I haven't seen any of the John Wicks yet, but everybody seems to love the action scenes, so hopefully he'll bring some of that over to this.

Having a veteran director come in to shoot pickups on another director’s film is not new. Rogue One is a recent example. There are many more. Often it’s a favor done for a studio they have worked for in the past. I will see if I can find some type of list.

Now we know much more about film production as it happens. The Wizard of Oz had 4 different directors.

I am amazed with these huge productions that there is still a single director. I suspect that is really only due to Director’s Guild of America rules. They heavily look down on dual credits. With the exceptions of some of the famous sibling director teams. They want to preserve the image of film’s having a singular artistic vision. To prevent studio interference.

But it’s partially a myth. Film making is a team effort. Unless you own your own studio and finance your own movies, there are very few A list directors who have total control of the released product.

Usually action films have a stunt coordinator and/or second unit director largely in control of those action sequences. I am thinking of the history of the James Bond films. Where often the main “guest directors” often deferred to the experience of regular action and stunt crews.

Yeah, that's evidently what's happening here. Chad Stahelski's main experience is as a stunt performer, stunt coordinator, and second-unit director (the John Wick trilogy are his only full-fledged director credits to date), and they're bringing him in to do second-unit and stunt work to punch up the action.

Naturally, the mere mention that the Harley Quinn and BoP movie has reshoots being done means the Net is already writing the film off as a lost cause.

Exactly. He's working on in his element, bringing his stunt experience to support the project.

I see this as a positive.

Well, sure. No reason to think otherwise, except that some people want to twist any production news into a negative even when it's something perfectly routine.

I'd much rather see someone come in to help out with the actions scenes, then leave it in the hands of an inexperienced director who doesn't have as a good a handle on that stuff. The actions scenes are such a big part of these kinds of movies that you really need them to be as good as possible. Especially for something like this, which sounds like it will be more street level, and so will probably rely on a lot more real stunts than the more cosmic level stuff where the action is mostly CGI.

I can't imagine any better news than that Margot Robbie's excellent Harley Quinn is getting fight scenes done by the director of John Wick. The fight scenes were one of the worst aspects of suicide squad. I'm glad they're paying attention to what needed improving.
