DC Comics Ongoing Discussion

I don't need to read it to read the damn article and see the cover. The idea that I have to eat shit to know it tastes bad is such a ridiculous defence I know people that use it have no real argument.

Thing is, you’ve been burnt by this attitude so many times over the years, that many would think you’d have learned something by now. Definitely seems like you would want to quit embarrassing yourself.

Calling something "shit" without reading it?
That would be like... condemning a streaming show without watching it.

The Secret Six are an awesome villain book by Gail Simone, not whatever the hell that is. This is like when Marvel Comics gave the Agents of Atlas name to some crappy new team, except that Gail Simone's Secret Six books were very popular (her first ongoing run with the title only got cancelled because of the New 52 reboot), unlike AoA which at least had the excuse of selling poorly.

Now its just Deadshot and Catman hanging out the the Gen Z Brigade, most of which are superheroes (why would heroes like Jon Kent or Dreamer work with unrepentant assassin Deadshot?). Also they claim Black Alice is on the team, but the only character it could be is such an awful, completely against the character redesign its like DC actively hates Gail Simone ( who created Black Alice for BoP, before she added the character to her secret Six team) now for some reason. Maybe they consider her writing an X-Men book to be a betrayal, although she's never really been an exclusive writer, she works for both of the Big 2 and indy companies.

Another day, another example of the idiots running DC actively ruining everything good the company ever did.
Just because something is different doesn't automatically mean it has to be bad.

Its more likely to be bad then good, and its very blatantly an insult to the original thing. They're stealing a name/concept for some stupid bullshit, because they're too creatively bankrupt to make their own thing so they're stealing someone elses work to try to get eyes on their junk.

Both Gail Simone and Nicole Maines are on social media. Why don't you go ask them about this instead of projecting your opinions on them?

Gail Simone is one of my favorite writers, but she still defends Didio and that man protected a habitual sexual harasser of women for years. Simone will never bad mouth anyone, both for career reasons and because she has a high tolerance for people doing bad things. Even after the time she was actively fucked over (getting fired from her popular Batgirl run during the New 52 until backlash forced them to rehire her) she would still kiss DC's butt. They could make the Secret Six into a villain group of rampaging cannibal misogynists who exclusively killed and ate female characters that Simone specifically likes and she'd be fine with it. She's a great comic writer, but I don't go to Gail Simone for unfiltered comic opinions.

Like Simone did when she took the name from an earlier series?

Yeah, Simone is just too kind and too career-oriented to say that she's totally against writers changing the backstory of established characters to fit their own creative vision.
Except, of course, when she does it herself, like with Rose & Thorn or Red Sonja, as well as - as @Santa Kang already mentioned - Secret Six itself. The prior versions were spy-fi, not super-villains.

And while it worked, it's not like Simone's basic premise was even that clever. It was basically the Suicide Squad* if they work for the Secret Society of Super-Villains instead of the US government. They even share Deadshot as a prominent member.

*modern version, as that monicker was previously held by different kinds of teams, as well. Because DC does that, and has always liked doing it.

Both Marvel and DC do this kind of stuff all the time, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the quality. Hell just recently I was shocked to see that Marvel had put out a Thunderbolts book where it was an all hero team, but from the reviews on Amazon it was a pretty great book. These kind of things happen constantly, hell from what other people are saying, it sounds likes like the version of the Secret Six you're so attached to was just as much of a revamp as the new version will be.

There was a 'Thunderbolts' series that was basically a comic book version of 'Fight Club'. It died a quick death.

I have a vague recollection that the very small number of fans of the original were not happy with the Simone remake because they thought it would tie-in to the original but didn’t (beyond the concept of the mysterious controller).

I have vague memory of quitting reading Secret Six back in the Action Comics Weekly era. Definitely wasn't for me.

Still actively enjoying Absolute Superman and Batman, have dropped Absolute Wonderwoman.

Now I'm only picking up Green Arrow on top of the two Absolute titles.

I'm enjoying all three of the Absolute books. I pre-ordered Absolute Flash because Jeff Lemire is writing it, but I skipped Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter.

I really like Mark Waid's work on the weekly Action Comics. The main plot deals with the Phantom Zone, and there was heavy philosophical and ethical pondering about it.
Obviously, Waid knew he'd have to off-set that with a comedic B-plot featuring Conner Kent and Kong Keenan (the Chinese Super-Man) in a kind of buddy-cop space adventure. I enjoy that bit, as well, though I have issues with the characterisations of the two characters. Conner basically acts as if he had had no character development since the late 1990s, and Kong Keenan comes off as way more educated and wise than in his prior appearances (for those who didn't read the book, Keenan was introduced as the bully jock type of character who has to find the good in himself).
But that's really my only gripe with the book. I also enjoy the back-up Supergirl feature by Mariko Tamaki, which is a kind of space opera noir mystery.

I enjoyed the main storyline, but I wasn't fan of the B-plot. I could have done without it.

Agreed on Mariko Tamaki's story. I only discovered her when she wrote Detective Comics, and I really enjoyed the new elements she brought to the table.

I miss reading Superman. Those 10ish issues before House of brainiac and then Absolute Power took over the main Superman book were the best Superman comics in years. At least World's Finest is still decent, so I get a bit of Superman in a decent comic regularly.

World's Finest, Justice League Unlimited and Batgirl are the DC books I'm keeping up with right now, and they're all pretty good (although Batgirl and JLU are only a few issues into their runs so I don't know how they'll work out long term). I don't like how JLU is still kind of dealing with Absolute Power's BS, but its also got an original story happening so I can tolerate the references to AP. As for Batgirl, I'm glad to see Cassandra Cain back in the starring role. She's a top 3 DC hero for me, and the book so far is using the character well.
