DC Comics Ongoing Discussion

I've been re-reading Stormwatch, The Authority, and Planetary. The Wildstorm Universe was an interesting and darker place. The characters certainly weren't as iconic as DC's and Marvel's but I do like how the books examine the ramifications of super-powers on society, the fear, the politics, etc. They did stuff in these books that they didn't or couldn't do in the DC Universe.

I'm finishing up on the one and only book for The Monarchy now. I picked it up on sale from a comic book store. I thought it would be like The Authority, but it's a let down. It's hard to get a grasp on what's happening and come on board with the new characters and I don't care for what they did to the Jackson King character. I think this was one of these series where it takes time to see what's going on, like a Grant Morrison book, but the thing is that there is only one trade, and I gues the series only went like 20 something issues.

Ellis' Stormwatch, The Authority (which I've read up to Brubaker's run), and Planetary are really great though.

Anyone read Wildcats or Mister Majestic? If so, are they any good?

His Creature Commandos already started, #1 and #2 came out last month and this month.

I caught the show, never read the comic, but it feels like a variation of the Doom Patrol.

Okay, I just found out issue one of a new New God's series hit the stands yesterday. Anyone pick it up? If so, how was it? I loved Kirby's run, as well as Byrne's run, along with Simonson's Orion. Would love to know if it's worth a pick up.

So, taking a break from rewatching the Superman trailer, I learned that DC also just dropped their solicits for March. And just scrolling through the first few entries, I know my reading pile isn't getting smaller anytime soon.

Let my start by saying that, by now, I've read the first issues of the Absolute trinity books. And while I still think I'd hate it if these were replacing the proper versions New 52-style, since they're not, I can simply enjoy them for the alternate takes that they are. And I really like them so far.
So, in March DC launches three further Absolute books, specifically Green Lantern, Flash and Martian Manhunter. And now that I've found the Absolute line to be fun and interesting, I just know that I'll get all those, too. So, immediately, three more monthly books for my pull list.

And after those, the very next book in the solicits is the launch of Secret Six. Which I was about ready to move past, until I noticed that it's written by Nicole Maines, and co-stars Dreamer and Jon Kent. So, now it's a must. At least it's announced as a limited series, so it's not as big a commitment as an ongoing series.

Well, on to the next book, which is the launch of a Superman limited series, specifically Phillip Kennedy Johnson's "finale" for his Action Comics run, which I guess he couldn't do in the Action Comics title because larger DC events going on.

Oh, and DC also launches a crossover series with Sonic the Hedgehog. ... Yeah, I've played the game as a kid, but I'm not really an involved Sonic fan, so I think my work/life/comic reading balance demands I skip this one.

Indeed. Thanks for highlighting this.

I wasn't as high on Johnson's run as a lot of people were (for one thing, if you take Clark off Earth, leaving Lois behind, you've eliminated at least half my interest in these stories), but good for his fans for sure. And I will of course pick it up in trade.

I thought it was a good start.

I've been re-reading Stormwatch, The Authority, and Planetary.

Never read Stormwatch, read the first year or two of Authority and enjoyed it, but Planetary is the GOAT. I always tell people "when you're ready to leave superheroes behind, read Planetary" because it is the only superhero book that ends with the heroes actually being proactive and changing their world for the better instead of being champions of the status quo like the DC and Marvel heroes.

An actual full on crossover with the DC characters and Sonic teaming up?

Yup.

I also forgot to mention the launch of a new 5-issue Peacemaker mini series where James Gunn is credited as Story Consultant. i do want to read that, but it's also something I feel I can trade-wait.

The Secret Six are an awesome villain book by Gail Simone, not whatever the hell that is. This is like when Marvel Comics gave the Agents of Atlas name to some crappy new team, except that Gail Simone's Secret Six books were very popular (her first ongoing run with the title only got cancelled because of the New 52 reboot), unlike AoA which at least had the excuse of selling poorly.

Now its just Deadshot and Catman hanging out the the Gen Z Brigade, most of which are superheroes (why would heroes like Jon Kent or Dreamer work with unrepentant assassin Deadshot?). Also they claim Black Alice is on the team, but the only character it could be is such an awful, completely against the character redesign its like DC actively hates Gail Simone ( who created Black Alice for BoP, before she added the character to her secret Six team) now for some reason. Maybe they consider her writing an X-Men book to be a betrayal, although she's never really been an exclusive writer, she works for both of the Big 2 and indy companies.

Another day, another example of the idiots running DC actively ruining everything good the company ever did.

I don't need to read it to read the damn article and see the cover. The idea that I have to eat shit to know it tastes bad is such a ridiculous defence I know people that use it have no real argument.
Nah. I'm sure there were people who looked a Giffen's Justice League and called it shit because it wasn't the 70's League. Same for the All-New X-Men because it wasn't the 60's team. It may very well be shit. But a cover and an article won't tell you that. It may tell you it's a book you're not interested in, though.

Calling something "shit" without reading it? Now that's a lack of an argument.

Both Gail Simone and Nicole Maines are on social media. Why don't you go ask them about this instead of projecting your opinions on them?
