DC can use the name "Captain Marvel" as much as they want, just not as the title of a comic (or movie, I guess). Grant Morrison called him Captain Marvel just last year, in his fairly high profile Multiversity series. They can even call him Captain Marvel on TV shows as long as its not the title. I like Carol Danvers a lot, but she's not the real Captain Marvel. Just because Marvel Comics were a-holes and pulled some trademark shenanigans in the 70s doesn't take away from the fact that Fawcett Comics created Captain Marvel in the late 1939/1940, and that character, and variations of him, are the real Captain Marvel.
I get why DC changed the name, but that's still not the character's real name. Unless we're talking about the horrible New 52 version, I'm fine with calling that idiotic jackass "Shazam". I acknowledge DC's name change they use for legal purposes in movies and on covers, but to me they have the rights to the only character who can rightfully be called Captain Marvel, and (with the exception of the horrible New 52 version) I'll always refer to him as Captain Marvel, and Marvel's Carol danvers/Mar-Vell/Genis-Vell/Phyla-Vell by the characters real names.
John has issues.
I actually agree with you! Marvel stole the name from Faucet/DC originally. There is no legal reason not to continue the Captain Marvel name.
Why would you call the pre-52 version "Shazam" anyway?
Obviously. They're not going make Shazaml movies and games with another version of the character. But the reprints of the older materiel will still be "Captain Marvel".Its not for the older ones, its that they're probably intending to call all the versions of the character from now on "Shazam". So, he'll be "Shazam" if they ever make that movie they've been talking about, etc. Plus, tie in material like video games and stuff like that also call him "Shazam" now, but I personally just disregard that. If I want to talk about him, I'll call him Captain Marvel. I only call the New 52 version "Shazam" because he's horrible and doesn't deserve to be acknowledged as a version of Captain Marvel. If he was a good, well written character I'd call him Captain Marvel regardless of what DC labeled him.
I'm not disputing that, i'm just saying that I hate the name (its the wizard's name, not the hero's) and that I won't be referring to any version of the character by that name, with the exception of the horrible New 52 version (and I'm not calling him that because its his name, I'm calling him that because he doesn't deserve to be acknowledged as a version of Captain Marvel)![]()
I guess I can see that. I just don't get that attatched to names like that, if I like a character I don't really care what they call them as look as it's that same character. Especially in a situation like this where you have two characters with the same name. At this point every time I see the Capt. Marvel my mind instantly goes to Carol Danvers, so I think changing the name was a great idea, and should have happened a long time ago.So? I'd buy something with "Shazam" in it, like a game. I'm not saying I'm boycotting anything. For example, if I'm playing the video game Injustice: Gods Amongst Us (A DC Comics fighting game), and I was, say, playing against my brother, I'd say "I'm picking Captain Marvel", even though he's called Shazam in the game. That's all I meant, that I'd ignore what he's called. i'm used to stuff with "Shazam" in the title, every comic he's starred in since the 70s has been called Shazam or Power of Shazam or Trial of Shazam, etc. It just used to be the title, not his name, and that's all I intend to treat it as. Its a really small thing that I didn't think would need so much explaining.
Captain Marvel is my favorite hero, and every version that isn't the horrible New 52 version I'll always call Captain Marvel, regardless of what DC does. I'm not boycotting/refusing to buy products with "Shazam" in the name, originally I was just saying that I will always think of him, and refer to him, as Captain Marvel.
"payback's a bitch"- Freddy FreemanI still refer to him as Captain Marvel as well. I think it is kind of funny that Shazam is the hero who can't say his own name:
"Thank you kind sir for rescuing my cat Fluffy from the tree! What do I call you?"
"Shazam...<boom>...uh, you can call me Billy."

The Wizard is still called Shazam?
Billy is called Shazam?
The Rock of "Eternity" sorta implies that something funky is going on with time?
Is Billy the Old Wizard who gives himself powers when he's his youngerself?
