DC Comics - Ongoing Discussion - SPOILERS

I lost interest in GL shortly after the N52, but I agree I miss Johns as a writer. He can do some great work at times.

Fuck space.

(That goes double for Thor.)

Green Lanterns on Earth is what I want to see.

Has Simon Baz said anything about his religion recently after spending the last (our time) four years in space? Not that space has weakened anyone elses religious resolve in the history of comics.

He started off fun, an African American Muslim mistaken as a terrorist awarded with a Green Lantern Ring and suddenly no prison can hold him, and serious doubts are levied against the guardians of the universe by the Department of Homeland Security that almost nearly convicted terrorists can become Green Lanterns.

If it wasn't for Flashpoint rebooting the universe, and Johns almost entirely ignoring that reboot, there's no way that Simon wasn't going straight into the Suicide Squad if he didn't want to see he grand parents dragged off to Camp X-Ray.

Johns just like inventing GLs and leaving them. He dumped Simon for Power Ring.

Simon is Lebanese-American, not African-American

DC can use the name "Captain Marvel" as much as they want, just not as the title of a comic (or movie, I guess). Grant Morrison called him Captain Marvel just last year, in his fairly high profile Multiversity series. They can even call him Captain Marvel on TV shows as long as its not the title. I like Carol Danvers a lot, but she's not the real Captain Marvel. Just because Marvel Comics were a-holes and pulled some trademark shenanigans in the 70s doesn't take away from the fact that Fawcett Comics created Captain Marvel in the late 1939/1940, and that character, and variations of him, are the real Captain Marvel.

I get why DC changed the name, but that's still not the character's real name. Unless we're talking about the horrible New 52 version, I'm fine with calling that idiotic jackass "Shazam". I acknowledge DC's name change they use for legal purposes in movies and on covers, but to me they have the rights to the only character who can rightfully be called Captain Marvel, and (with the exception of the horrible New 52 version) I'll always refer to him as Captain Marvel, and Marvel's Carol danvers/Mar-Vell/Genis-Vell/Phyla-Vell by the characters real names.

I actually agree with you! Marvel stole the name from Faucet/DC originally. There is no legal reason not to continue the Captain Marvel name.

Regarding Constantine:

John has issues.

His overcoat is as much a part of his appearance as the big red S on Superman. Change its design a little but keep it. Even the horrible Keanu Reeves movie knew this.

I don't think they changed it for legal reasons as much as brand recognition reasons.
They could legally use Captain Marvel as the name of the character, but general audiences would think he's a Marvel Comics character.

That's definitely why they're calling him "Shazam". Still, I personally will never call any version but the New 52 one "Shazam". He's the legitimate Captain Marvel, even if the a-holes in charge of Marvel in the 70s decided to take advantage of a stupid mistake/oversight on Fawcett/DC's part and take his name.

Why would you call the pre-52 version "Shazam" anyway?

Its not for the older ones, its that they're probably intending to call all the versions of the character from now on "Shazam". So, he'll be "Shazam" if they ever make that movie they've been talking about, etc. Plus, tie in material like video games and stuff like that also call him "Shazam" now, but I personally just disregard that. If I want to talk about him, I'll call him Captain Marvel. I only call the New 52 version "Shazam" because he's horrible and doesn't deserve to be acknowledged as a version of Captain Marvel. If he was a good, well written character I'd call him Captain Marvel regardless of what DC labeled him.

Obviously. They're not going make Shazaml movies and games with another version of the character. But the reprints of the older materiel will still be "Captain Marvel".

I'm not disputing that, i'm just saying that I hate the name (its the wizard's name, not the hero's) and that I won't be referring to any version of the character by that name, with the exception of the horrible New 52 version (and I'm not calling him that because its his name, I'm calling him that because he doesn't deserve to be acknowledged as a version of Captain Marvel)

Good luck with that. You're not going to find any games, movies or merch with "Captain Marvel " on them.

So? I'd buy something with "Shazam" in it, like a game. I'm not saying I'm boycotting anything. For example, if I'm playing the video game Injustice: Gods Amongst Us (A DC Comics fighting game), and I was, say, playing against my brother, I'd say "I'm picking Captain Marvel", even though he's called Shazam in the game. That's all I meant, that I'd ignore what he's called. i'm used to stuff with "Shazam" in the title, every comic he's starred in since the 70s has been called Shazam or Power of Shazam or Trial of Shazam, etc. It just used to be the title, not his name, and that's all I intend to treat it as. Its a really small thing that I didn't think would need so much explaining.

Captain Marvel is my favorite hero, and every version that isn't the horrible New 52 version I'll always call Captain Marvel, regardless of what DC does. I'm not boycotting/refusing to buy products with "Shazam" in the name, originally I was just saying that I will always think of him, and refer to him, as Captain Marvel.

this is one of those rare times when i agree with 5s. i don't like the new Billy Batson...at all. he is an unlikable little jerk. but then, kids today are not at all like they were when the big red cheese first appeared. in my head i still call him Captain Marvel. i kinda like the new costume though.

I still refer to him as Captain Marvel as well. I think it is kind of funny that Shazam is the hero who can't say his own name:

"Thank you kind sir for rescuing my cat Fluffy from the tree! What do I call you?"
"Shazam...<boom>...uh, you can call me Billy."

I guess I can see that. I just don't get that attatched to names like that, if I like a character I don't really care what they call them as look as it's that same character. Especially in a situation like this where you have two characters with the same name. At this point every time I see the Capt. Marvel my mind instantly goes to Carol Danvers, so I think changing the name was a great idea, and should have happened a long time ago.

When I see Carol Danvers, I think Ms. Marvel, and that won't change. I like Carol Danvers as a character a lot, but she's nowhere near as good a character as the real Captain Marvel. She never was, and never will be. To be fair, she's better than Mar-Vell , who was super bland, but The Earth's Mightest Mortal will always be the only real Captain Marvel. He's the first, the best, and, in my opinion, the only one.

The Wizard is still called Shazam?

Billy is called Shazam?

The Rock of "Eternity" sorta implies that something funky is going on with time?

Is Billy the Old Wizard who gives himself powers when he's his youngerself?

Well, in the New 52 the Wizard is (or at least looks to be, he might never have been human for all I know) of African decent, so definitely not.

Pre-reboot the wizard had an origin as getting his powers and name "shazam" from older gods (I think ones that humanity wouldn't even know anymore or something like that), and definitely wasn't Billy Batson.

In the DC 1,000,000 series Billy Batson is shown to still be alive a million years in the future, and has taken the old Wizard's place in the Rock of Eternity, which is the closest to what you describe.
