Interesting that even in that abbreviated 30-second montage, they managed to fit in Lois kissing Clark, Lois kissing Superman, and Lois and Superman gazing intensely and meaningfully at each other.

I've already seen reactions to the teaser trailer like one from fangirlish.com focusing on the romantic shots in the trailer, and hoping the film represents a renaissance of romance in superhero movies. Comics writer Gail Simone has also written in the past about how she believes making Superman romantic and sexy to women was a big part of the success of the first two Reeve movies, as well as the popularity of TV shows like Lois & Clark and Smallville. Gunn and his marketing people may be on to something here.

(None of which is to suggest that all women prioritize romance, or that only women do. I myself am a dude, and Lois and Clark's relationship is my number-one-with-a-bullet most important thing in Superman stories.)

The Lois-and-Clark romance has been a central feature of the comic book mythology, through numerous revisions and reversals of continuty, ever since John Byrne established it firmly as such in his Man of Steel reboot circa 1986. He's said that his take on the characters was greatly inspired by the Reeve movies.

Actually, after several days' reflection and numerous reviewings of the trailer, probably my only complaint is that Lois is framed almost exclusively in relation to Clark/Superman. I'd like it if we saw her doing at least one interesting and dynamic thing on her own -- say, confronting Luthor or otherwise courting danger, or even just shouting questions at someone with notebook in hand. (I do think she may be in a brief shot with Mr. Terrific -- I believe she's the other person under his forcefield getting shot at -- but even that is kind of a damsel in distress moment.) Still, I trust Gunn will give her plenty of character and agency in the actual film.

Okay, I don't really "get" reaction videos - most break down to someone repeating "Oh my God" when they like something or "What the fuck?" when they don't. Case in point...

Some are like that, some have a lot more commentary, other people pause after every shot to discuss it in detail. You gotta pick the style that's right for you I guess.

BTW, apples-to-apples: This is the original teaser trailer for MoS, in 2012:

That’s the one I watched after watching the new one. I find this one more compelling than the new one. Not that I think the new one is bad or uninteresting. The earlier one, to me, suggested I would get a version of the story that differed from most of the others (regardless of media). The new one suggests I will get a more classic and familiar take on Superman. Either approach is fine with me—I simply prefer something that challenges my expectations. The earlier trailer did that more effectively than the new one. Obviously that’s a personal preference. It’s not intended as a knock against the new trailer or the new movie. I’m quite looking forward to seeing it.

I wasn't nearly the dedicated Superman fan then that I am now -- I didn't even see MoS in the theater -- but even putting aside any and every bias, I think I would have had a very hard time getting as excited by that teaser as Gunn's. At best, I might have been a mix of intrigued and uncertain about the tone and the dour, mundane imagery.

Wow, I have to admit, that did.... absolutely nothing for me. No emotional reaction to it AT ALL. I suppose maybe if I were a bigger fan of Deadliest Catch?

What Snyder failed to do was create a basis for the character that we felt it would "hurt" him if he did. Like, if that happened after 3 seasons of SUpergirl or Flash, we could feel the emotion. But "no killing" didn't seem like a "rule" for CLark at that point.

I think Cavill did an excellent job of selling the pain of being trapped in a situation where there was no choice other than standing by and letting innocent people die when he clearly had the power to stop it or else deliberately choosing to kill the last other person alive who has any connection at all to his past.

I fully respect how much a lot of people didn't want to see that story told, but knowing whether Clark ever consciously formulated an explicit 'no kill' rule or even whether or not he unconsciously hated the idea of killing in general really isn't necessary to feeling the pain in that moment.

I may be a Snyderverse fan, but I'm also a fan of the Arrowverse series, "Superman & Lois". But I haven't liked a movie that James Gunn did since 2014's "Guardians of the Galaxy". At least he had worked with a co-writer for that film. Gunn has been the sole writer for the productions he did since. Unfortunately.

But it is like Alexander Courage's Star Trek theme. It is still used, even in part with different arrangements. It is more or less the theme of the USS Enterprise now. The Superman theme could and should have a similar treatment. Much like the version in the teaser is an arrangement of the theme, not the direct theme. Artists can still be themselves while homaging the past, and such a strong theme like that from John Williams likely should remain with the character of Superman in some capacity.
James Bond theme comes to mind.

James Gunn wrote the script for Zack Snyder's 2004 'Dawn of the Dead'.
What do you think of that?
