DC Cinematic Universe ( The James Gunn era)

source:

Ah, that clarifies the interview scene in the trailer. The description of the character dynamic sounds really interesting. Overall, the article makes it sound as if this could be a very rich movie in concept and character development, but it runs the risk of being too crowded with ideas and characters to do them all justice. It could work very well if it manages to strike the right balance, but a clumsy studio-imposed edit of the sort that WB-DC is infamous for could wreck that balance.

From the article: "In the source material, Lois is historically a smoker, which the team chose not to depict in this film." Uhh, have we ever seen Lois depicted as a smoker outside of the Reeve and Routh movies? Maybe John Byrne's Lois was, but otherwise I don't recall that being a character trait of hers.

It looks like they've changed the spelling of DC's Ultraman to Ultra Man, no doubt to differentiate from Tsuburaya's Ultraman, who's pretty high-profile in the US these days.

soon to be renamed HBO Max

I hung up on that for a minute too, but then remembered she’s been depicted as at least an occasional smoker in the comics as recently as the Bendis era:

I ended up not reading the whole long EW article, because I felt like it was revealing too much. I think I’m getting to the point I often get to in the ramp-up to highly anticipated movies, where I want to tune out as much as possible as more and more promotion and other info gets out there. I feel like I know as much as I want to at this point before I sit down in the theater next month.

"This isn't like the interview in the Donner movie where Lois doesn't know that he's Clark," Corenswet says, referring to a scene from the Reeve-led classic with Margot Kidder. "Lois knows everything about him, so he's in a very vulnerable position. He's madly in love with this woman and desperately wants her to understand him and appreciate him and love him back."

Hm. I think most of what later comics and productions have emulated about the Reeve movies' depiction of Lois has been a positive, but this is the exception.

IIRC she was also a smoker in Smallville, though she had just quit before we meet her.

Calling her "historically a smoker" is still weird, considering how often Lois has not been a smoker. And to think, it's almost entirely (arguably!) thanks to one scene in Superman II.

Yeah, I think she’s only been a smoker in isolated instances. Though I would say probably the most memorable bit involving it was not in Superman II, but in Superman ‘78. (“Well, not yet, thank goodness.”)

I think a lot of people today are unaware that Superman had a history before 1978. Or at least they're far more familiar with the movies than any other incarnation.

As I recall, Lois was a pretty heavy smoker throughout both movies. Reportedly, Philip Morris paid thousands for the product placement.

She almost never smokes in the '78 movie. The dinner scene is the only time she lights up at all.

I've always assumed most people imagine her as a heavy smoker thanks to the orange juice scene in Superman II. (Which if I'm not mistaken is the only scene where she smokes in that movie.)

First, he's trying to follow Cavill's Superman / film, the greatest live action casting of the character & adaptation to date, and now he has to attempt the same with the undeniably best actress to portray Wonder Woman ever put before cameras. Very tough road ahead.

Gunn will succeed. It's not that I have any plans to watch his films. Not really interested. But I suspect he'll succeed.
