Now that you mention it, it would have been a great idea to introduce an unjoined Trill recurring character some time during the show - not in order to replace Jadzia, but in order to explore the Trill society and culture, the relations and differences in status between the joined and the unjoined, etc. This was never really properly explored on screen (the books do a much better job of it), and it provided so many opportunities. Why not have another Trill character? They had all those recurring Ferengis, and that required a lot more makeup, while OTOH, you just need to put a few spots on a Trill actor. Not to mention that Trill society, IMO, would be a lot more interesting to explore than the Ferengi. It would have also been a great way to give Jadzia more to do - and explore her Trillness, instead of making her episodes all about the Klingons, one of the most over-used races in Trek. Ezri could have been portrayed as a Trill who didn't even want to be joined (like she was portrayed in "The Lives of Dax"), which would have provided a different perspective: all the other Trills we ever met were either joined, or desperately wanted to be joined.

And having Ezri as a counselor helping Miles overcome his experience from "Hard Time" would have been also great, as that episode really needed to be followed upon.

I wonder what the cameraderie between Ezri and Jadzia would be?

Would they clash a bit over thier respective philosophies, concerning joining...or how they view men (Ezri, of course, is more respectful towards guys, I think), etc.?

It would have been interesting to see the relationship between joined and unjoined Trills. The only Trill we've seen that isn't joined or desperately wants to be joined is Perim from Insurrection, and we don't know if she's joined or not, from what's onscreen.

If it were up to me, I'd have the dynamic be something similar to the Bajoran caste system in the episode "Accession." It wouldn't be a strictly caste-based society, since that's illegal in the Federation. However, unjoined Trills would be treated as something similar to second-class citizens. Joined Trills would often look down on them, see them as unclean in some way, or at the least have a patronizing/condescensing relationship with them.

On a more individual character level, I think you hit the nail right on the head Rush. The Jadiza-Ezri relationship would have been interesting since they treat men so radically differently.

Ezri: (nods) Mmm-hmm!

Ezri: (scoff) Well, I should think that's why he chose ME!

Jadzia: Oh...?

Ezri: (spreads out her hands) Yeah--at least I don't go sleeping around with every single unmarried man on this station, like you!

Bashir: Uh, ladies, maybe we should--

Jadzia and Ezri: Stay outta this, Julian!

If not, I'd take normal Ezri. I'm definitely popping over to the mirror side to get a taste of dirty Ezri now and then though. I'll just take my chances on her possibly pulling a knife from under the pillow.
