Data Looked Great in Command Red

Turbo said:
I seem to recall reading somewhere that Data was originally going to be the science officer, but the costumers thought his makeup clashed horribly with the original blue jumpsuits.

You know.. you might be on to something there.

;)

Data was originally supposed to be in a Blue Science Uniform, but they thought it clashed too much with his makeup so they put him in Gold and made up the "Operations" post as an explanation.

Isn't it true that Data was supposed to be in blue, but it clashed with his makeup?

Actualy, I think Gene originaly wanted him in either a blue Micro-Mini (for gender equality) or the bunny suit Troi later inherited. But Spiner didn't have the legs or boobs for it.

They definitely made a good call on switching the colours. Stewart and Frakes look awful. I can only imagine how bad Brooks and Mulgrew would've looked in that colour.

No need to imagine!

And Wrongway Janeway:

Wow! Janeway looks pretty cool. Still wish they had put the Voyager crew in the DS9/TNG-Movie uniforms.

The blue is a little too turquoise. The blue of the TNG uniform is significantly darker. Otherwise, pretty cool work. :)

The original one-piece jumpers by William Theiss were a darker blue. He had said that he took the TOS colors and gave them a darker color value for TNG. The original blue, however, clashed with the green screen. When the uniforms were re-done by Robert Blackman, he kept using a lighter and lighter blue eventually getting a teal for the science/medical divisions. Gates' uniform was one of the early versions of blue used by Blackman; her later uniforms would use the teal (that is why it looks darker next to Quice's). If you look at Quice's, Bashir's and Lt. Picard's science uniform, you'll notice that they are teal.

On a related note, I notice that Troi's uniform in "These are the Voyages" appeared to be teal where as her uniform in TNG was blue. Don't know if her uniform in the ENT episode was new or from storage.

What's strange is that when the ENT episode was played on UK Channel 4, her uniform appeared to be the darker blue from TNG! Something to do with the PAL conversion perhaps?

I think I had heard once they always had trouble with the uniform fabric absorbing the blue/green dyes differently each time they used it hence the wide discrepancies in color.

That's exactly the reason. IIRC, the Spandex they used didn't take dyes too well, which was also part of the decision to change the uniforms for Season 3 (as well as the fact that they are incredibly uncomfortable to wear.)

I do wish they could've used the avocado green/gold for TNG. The actors would stand out much more from the muted tans of the ship (mainly on the bridge.) I understand the bluescreen concern, but that would have been a moot point after Season 3 or so.

I've always thought TNG suffered from a large lack of color, but after looking at Bernd's analysis of the TATV footage, it looks as if there's a little more variety that's been hidden by video compositing.

TNG's color was fine, DS9, Voyager and the FC uniforms where far to dark and realy sucked the vibrance out of those series/movies.

She does look great. I'm surprised how well the gold suits her.

I think red is a superior command color, as you say it is more aggressive and in my mind therefore more authoritative. Then again, I did watch TNG first. Ah, TOS-R, I think you missed something. (Kidding!)

That said, I prefer Data in blue. I can't imagine why they thought his makeup would clash... I think it actually matches pretty well, and blues and yellows do match by contrast. I think it's more likely that they feared Data would be perceived too much like Spock if he were science officer, hence the Ops position (which could incorporate various duties similar to sciences) was created to avoid nominal similarity.

Let's not forget that Data's make-up was originally "bubble gum pink." Imagine that against the blue uniform.

What probably happened was they developed the "pasty gold" make-up after they switched Brent to the gold uniform and decided to just keep it that way.

^Get out! Really? Bubble gum pink????

That and the man-skirts?!?!? What were the producers smoking?

Let's see it the otherway.

How would TOS Kirk look in Command Red?

For some reason, it only looks good in the movies, with everyone wearing the standard red uniform. That 60s uniform is just too plain to appreciate the red color.
