News Cruz On The Return of Dr. Culber

Man, they have so royally fucked up Stamets & Culber (I'd be more excited for the resurrection if we hadn't seen Stamets easily bounce back from Culber's murder). I am so glad Berg & Harberts are gone -- it's beyond remarkable that Harberts gave all those interviews about how this was NOT going to be a "kill your gays" story, before presenting us with the quintessential "kill your gays" story.

Plenty of writers are bad enough to write this hacky trope, but very few writers are so bad that they can write it WHILE EXPLICITLY TRYING NOT TO WRITE IT. I expect Stamets/Culber to stand in my mind for some time as the single worst and most off-putting example of "kill your gays" that I have yet seen, which really says something given that I know the gay in question is about to be unkilled! They knew what ditch they were trying to avoid the whole time, and somehow that still didn't stop them from barreling right into it.

But, as ever, I remain hopeful that with a new headwriter and selective amnesia, I'll be loving the season 2 Stamets/Culber story as much as I loved them in the front half of season one.

I thought he might be coming back as MU Culber.
However they do it, I’m glad he’s back - and main cast.
The kill your gays trope was a bad move.

I'd rather see Lorca, Prime Georgiou or pretty much anyone else brought back to life before Culber. I can't be the only one who didnt give a crap about him or his death. The character was bland and forgettable. His death scene was the most memorable thing he did and that's only because of how idiotic it was for him to confront Tyler alone.

I was hoping for a real CMO and new love interest(s) for Stamets in Season 2. Culber is/was blah.

1. Its the 23rd century, they can put him in stasis and fix broken necks....right?
2. Q brings him back
3. They discover the Guardian of forever and time travel back to save him, Burnham's parents and stop the whole damn war. And are then told to keep the dodgy looking cave a secret.

(all the above options are as good as any Star Trek plot you see on T.V!)

You forgot someone cutting off his skin and wearing it.

Kind of defeats the purpose of the drama if you just bring back people from the dead. Reeks of campyness. And I liked Culber.

Oh, well. What went from cautious optimism when the trailer dropped, has steadily slipped into the "meh, why should I care about the drama when the writers clearly don't?"

So MCU basically :)
Makes sense, if it works for hottest franchise around, it could work for Star Trek.
My highest theoretical score for STD season 2 is holding at 8/10 (1st season was 4/10). But I have my doubts it will stay that high for very long. Also have to figure out how to grade the Trek Shorts that will be released before Season 2. Probably will grade them separately from season 2.

Meh, I seem to recall talk around the time season 1 ended that we hadn't seen the last of Culber, this isn't exactly unexpected.
They've shown the CMO. not for long, but she's around.
We haven't seen the CMO, just a reference to the CMO doing an Andorian tonsillectomy. I know some people believe the doctor seen operating on Tyler in the second season is the CMO, but I kind of doubt it. Considering how much she consulted with Saru on routine medical matters, I would worry if she were.

Both. That is what's taking him so long!
Exactly. Culber better damn well come back. I need him to hold my [untranslatable Andorian anatomical reference] while I yank out the [untranslatable Andorian anatomical reference] attached to the tonsils. CULBER!!!!!! :scream:

I thought Pollard was the CMO. I could be wrong.

Pollard definitely was not CMO, her rank is only Lieutenant JG. Culber outranked her, he was a Lt. Commander. For that matter, the medical department had one other Lt Commander, the guy who looked after the space whale. A Lieutenant JG is not going to have two Lt. Commanders under her authority.

My money is on him coming back as a Angel from the Red Stuff. Or a "Starman" type of alien.

Honestly, I think Culber's death was so stupid and pointless and completely uncompelling or in any way believable that I'll be happy to see them just completely mulligan the whole thing. Technobabble blah blah, he's alive again and he and Stamets can go back to being a great tv couple like they should have remained all along. I don't even care how it happens.

Though since he has been gone so long, they really should at least give us some of Stamet's grief and loss before his return. Having him move past the whole thing so easily is dumb.

Odd to have a doctor at Lt Jr anyway
