crowd-response reports (SPOILERS)

Lucky you people, lotsa people in the cinemas...

WTF?!?

I LOATHE crowds in cinemas.

More people you get, more chance there's going to be loud mouth dickheads. There's a reason why I am going to see this at Gold Class NEXT Tuesday!!!!

Sadly, the theater was only 25% full, however there were 9 showings. No one dressed up, but several people saw it more than once. I am not too surprised considering when they showed The Cage there was maybe 15 people there. I hope the IMAX across town had better attendance . . . we are going there later this weekend.

I went to a 10.30am Friday morning session and there was only 16 people in the 'crowd". I am quite sure the later showing would have attracted a larger crowd.

There was no cheering or clapping but that is the norm in Tasmania. Even during the most action packed and exciting movies Tasmanians tend to be quiet even when there is a full crowd. I heard a couiple of laughs but even when a movie is funny Tasmanians try not to laugh too loud.

The best way to judge Tasmania's reaction is to listen to conversations on the way out. With only 16 people in the cinema I only heard a couple of people say what they thought of the movie. Both of loved it as I did.

A few people clapped in my theater when the credits started rolling... But I (and the others) didn't join in -- we'd like to think we aren't total and complete nerds ;)

As posted in the Australian premier thread, I noticed two things, while minor, they were noticable:

1. Zachary Quinto's Spock said something to his mother in the early stages of the film to which an audience member scoffed in disgust to. I took a small sip of my lemon, lime and bitters to tame the cringe factor.

2. ] When Nemoy's Spock had his first on screen appearance a member of the audience clapped to which i took one really big gulp of my lemon, lime and bitters.

I think I posted this in the reviews thread.. but as it'll get buried within the many, many pages...

I was in Glasgow's Cineworld, Thursday 10am. I didn't expect much as it was an early viewing, classed as preview as it was the 7th, not well advertised and people tend to work Thursdays.

The crowd though was around 75% full, some geeky types but lots of groups and people on their own (like me - but this was work for me, heh). There were a few people waiting with me outside for the cinema to open and a lot of disappointment with the delay.

There were a few laughs in all the right places, one of the guys next to me (they seemed to be enjoying the film - but they were speaking Chinese so no idea what comments they were making) laughed at one of Spocks more dramatic lines which caused a few people around me to wonder what was funny, heh.

There were a few whispers and gasps when Nimoy appeared on screen and before his face was revealed I could hear people saying "Is that him?" but it's the first film I've been to where no one has got up for snacks or a bathroom break once it started and only a minority of people left when the credits started to roll. Everyone kicked back and enjoyed the music.

One older-middle aged guy walked out half way through. The tagline was 'This is not your fathers Star Trek', he seemed to agree :p

When I went on Wednesday (and us girls always got the chop from the cinema's staff for crashing the men's night; the men weren't bothered), the place was pretty packed, and people thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. It was great. I'm going again in half an hour- this time I'll go see it in English though. I believe that'll be better for me.

I saw the movie at 7:00pm last night (Thursday). The theater was bout 2/3rds full to capacity.

The crowd was fairly responsive during the movie. Laughing at times, "uh-ohing" when it called for it, a few people holding up Vulcan salutes during a couple of Vulcan moments and most gave an ovation at the end.

A lot of people were actively talking about the movie and former Trek waiting around while the credits rolled and as we left the theater.

Movie Experiance (Spoilers maybe)

We have so many threads about the movie, but what about the movie going experience. Did people laugh, cheer, groan? Did you meet anyone. What were the trailers you saw before the movie and how packed/empty was it when you went. The movie itself is only half the fun. One of the reasons I wanted to go last night was to take advantage of the other half, the atmosphere.

So for me, I was very surprised the theater was half empty. I expected a lot more people there but for some reason it still felt just right. There were no disruptions from the phone or anything, and it just was a calm but still lively evening. I did meet this one guy though who is a DJ and he seemed very energetic. He was on the edge of his seat the whole time and it actually seemed a little crazy.

As for reactions to the film. people cheered when they saw the Title, old spock, (I got goosebumps) and at some other moments. At the end, there were some applause (I don't really understand the idea of applauding a movie, unless I was going to an event and there were people who were actually part of the movie were in the seats. As for the people who work at the theater, I appreciate what they do, but it is their jobs and I wouldn't applaude them after a movie like Transformers either.) and some cheers.

The trailers I saw were Year One (Which looks funny as heck), Night at the Museum II, Transformers II, Land of the Lost, Terminator: Salvation, and GI Joe. I was a bit surprised as to the comedies that were featured and wondered to my friend, "Is Star Trek a comedy?" At the end of the movie, I realized why.

Re: Movie Experiance (Spoilers maybe)

The loudest groan came during the scene where Spock explains the alternate universe idea...not because of the dialogue, but because someone pulled a fire alarm at that moment and caused a 10 minute break in the movie.

Other than that, people responded well to all the bits of familiar dialogue and laughed at all the stuff that was supposed to be funny. Applause at the end of both showings I went to.

Re: Movie Experiance (Spoilers maybe)

Transformers II, GI Joe, Land of the Lost, Terminator: Salvation, and Night at the Museum II were the trailers I remember. GI Joe doesn't look that good. Transformers II looks identical to the first. Terminator looks great.

I went at 7pm and 10pm and at both times it was only half full. Identical cheering/clapping/laughing at both showings.

There was one group of costumed guys at the 7 pm. There was a group of teenagers that threw popcorn at them. The costumed guys mostly ignored them, but one guy snapped at them. As soon as the lights went out he got a large soft drink to the back of the head.

Re: Movie Experiance (Spoilers maybe)

As I posted elsewhere, our IMAX showing (7pm) was delayed 1.5 hours because the movie download stopped at 75% and they couldn't get it resumed. Once they got the rest of the file, it was smooth sailing. Everyone in the audience (already impatient) where throwing around barbs at the management and there was some people asking trivia questions (I won, by the way).

I guess because of the delay, we only saw the Transformer II coming attraction.

Re: Movie Experiance (Spoilers maybe)

I was at the 7:00 showing which is the first available showing at what is normally a busy theater and the seats were less than one quarter full. It was kind of discouraging. There was a bigger crowd for the opening of Cloverfield if that is any indication. I guess this isn't much of a Star Trek town.

There was polite laughter at some of the jokes but no cheering. We don't really cheer at the movies here in Oregon.

Re: Movie Experiance (Spoilers maybe)

Was anyone at a showing where someone streaked the theater auditorium before the lights went dark?

Re: Movie Experiance (Spoilers maybe)

Everybody was quiet, people laughed at the right moments and a few even applaused at the end. I didn't. That's too nerdy for me. :D

But overall, the crowd was very good. Not too emotional, fortunately, but not completely silent as well.

Re: Movie Experiance (Spoilers maybe)

Where I was we all applauded when the movie first started and then again when the words STAR TREK appeared -- nothing after the movie...everybody was OUT with the quickness lol.

CarMike Cinema in Eau Claire WI.

7:00PM Showing - The 1st of 2 for the night.

Showing on 2 screens, both were half full. The 9:40 showing though had both theaters sold out.

Crowd reaction was mostly laughs. No clapping. Some stayed till the end of the credits.

Crowd had parents with kids and lots of 20-50. I saw one lady who must have been 70+ but that was it.

Noone was dressed up, but I myself was wearing a Mr. Spork T-shirt from woot. I got a few comments....

Overall, pretty good showing here in Eau Claire, WI.
