crowd-response reports (SPOILERS)

Here's what I said in the review thread...

I bought my ticket on Monday and spent the rest of the week dreading today. Why? I didn't want to sit in a crowded theatre. I spent a little more money and got a ticket at a larger theatre, but still... There's that concern. Anyhoo, The start time was 7pm, so I made sure I arrived at 6pm but ended up in a line anyway. I was close to the front and watched it get pretty long as more people trickled in. Some of them were even dressed up in starfleet uniforms, TOS and TNG style. There were even a few pretty hot ladies in the skirt uniforms. Oddly enough, no one in the line acknowleged the folks in uniform. When I finally went into the theatre, I got myself a good seat and despite the long line, the theatre wasn't crowded. I had my space. I was relieved. This was going to be a good movie-going experience. Eventually the lights dimmed and I was watching Star Trek.

I want to say one other thing... I've never been to a movie that got 6 rounds of applause.

1st Round: After the Kelvin teaser when "STAR TREK" appeared on the screen.

2nd Round: When we saw the Enterprise for the first time.

3rd Round: When Sulu whipped out his sword.

4th Round: When Spock appeared.

5th Round: At the beginning of the closing credits.

6th Round: When Gene & Majel's names appeared at the end of the credits. This was from a few people who stayed to watch 'til the end of the credits.

My theatre was about half-full for the 7:00pm show. No costumes. Some applause, some laughter. I laughed quite a bit, there was so much to love about it. Nobody here seemed to know it was actually opening today. I know people who are going tomorrow and I'm going again on Sunday to a matinee.

My 7:30pm showing was sold out... so was the 7 and the 8pm and the one right after ours...

In my theater, not a lot of laughing... but some applause and a lot of applause at the end of the movie... which is the most important I think...

Woodbridge IMAX in Ontario Canada was sold out for 7pm and 930pm, and when I went in at 530pm it was 1/3 full, and the 1145pm show was almost sold out.

The audience was mostly fans, a few people dressed up (2 or 3, in Starfleet uniforms) and applause at the end of the movie. People laughed at most of the jokes.

Full theater, no costumes, lots of annoying clapping, no cell phones, and only one person got up to go get more popcorn! :techman:

I live in the center of Iowa. I saw an 8:00 PM showing today in the second of two screens showing the movie. The theatre I was in was somewhere between half and three-quarters full -- about half of the people looked like your average nerdy Star Trek fan, and about the other half looked more like a regular movie going crowd. The age range went up into the fifties but I don't think there was anyone younger than twelve in there.

The crowd loved it. One of the best things about the experience for me was feeling the excitement of the crowd -- Star Trek really felt alive. I was in a pretty applause-heavy crowd as they burst into applause at three points: When little kid Spock took it out on his bullies; When Chekov saved Kirk and Sulu with his transporter skills; and one of the big scenes in the end. Oddly enough Chekov got the strongest applause out of those three scenes. Chekov's almost like a puppy, isn't he?

Other side notes: The crowd cheered when "Iowa" was printed on the screen. Seriously, we get no lovin' in popular culture or media.

Yup, I'm in Iowa too, and there was some cheering and laughter when Iowa appeared. There was also plenty of applause at the end. Pretty full theater.

There were probably about 50 people in the theater at the 10 PM showing I went to. It was showing simultaneously on 3 screens. I didn't hear a peep out of anyone before, during or after the film... probably the best part of the whole experience.

the imax showing i went to was sold out.
the theatre was almost full about 45 minutes before the start.
the crowd was really into the movie and responded well to it.

the kelvin got applause as did the first appearance of bones.
there was laughter in the right spots...

some reacted to the destruction of vulcan.

most reacted the first time we see spock.

applause at the end.

Columbia, SC: nothing noteworthy, and for all appearances, just a normal movie experience. A fair crowd, but not too many people--granted, it was a 10 o'clock showing, yet somehow I expected more.

One thing got me, when a few people laughed at Chekov's "aye-aye, ai-ai-ai"... which happens right after Vulcan implodes. I definitely wasn't laughing here--and I'm unsure whether it's just a misreading on the audience's part of Chekov's line, bad timing on Yelchin's part, or if, indeed, they were trying to make a funny after six billion people died.

Nobody applauded any scene, or at the end. I almost applauded through conditioning (I wind up having to applaud a lot at school, which is annoying) during the standing ovation, which gave me my moment of self-loathing for the day. I don't judge, but I've never really felt it was appropriate to applaud a film. They can't hear you.

Nearly full crowd in Imax theater. crowd cheered big time at the end. Personally I loved the scene with Kirk's bad reaction to the medicine. Also, I'm glad they finally came up with the reason for bones nickname.

7:45 PM Thursday show. Not crowded, with mostly everyone packed in the middle section, toward the front. Some laughing. Then, after that special ending credits, when the real credits started, the movie abruptly shut off. There was some reaction, then someone yelled "What happened to the fucking credits!?" lol. Oh, and there was a woman with an authentic Storm Trooper helmet on, taking pictures in front of the Star Trek pop-out poster thingy.

7 p.m.s.

Sporting the Beat Me Up Scotty tee. Not a soul in costume. Drag.

Much LAFFS and applesauce.

My darlings, the Trek hath been restored.

2/3 full at 10:35 pm Thurs night
Laughter at the right times, awe at the right times, especially at the death of Spock's mom ... scattered applause at the end that died rather quickly, but I overheard quite a few comments mentioning the movie was good on the way out

My wife and I went to the 9:40 show in West Lafayette, Indiana. The WL theater had it playing four times; a theater over the river in Lafayette was had six shows Thursday night. We arrived about 25 minutes before show time and a line had already formed; a few minutes later the line was snaking around the theater and out the door. Needless to say everyone was very happy when it was finally time to head in.

The theater I was in was probably about 80% full (seats probably 200-225). The crowd was excited and rather loud during the previews but became dead silent once the film began. There were the oohs and aahs in the expected places, and the crowd laughed at all the jokes as well. Everyone seemed really engrossed in the movie. About everyone applauded at the end.

Since I was in a college town almost everyone was in the 18-25 age group, probably 60/40 men to women. I saw one person in a TOS uniform. Everyone seemed pretty happy while heading out of the theater.

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

What did they think of it, RAMA?

Both really liked it. I had to explain to one who some of the new actors were. They were familiar with some things but not everything about ST.

RAMA

Went to the 7pm showing in Gainesville, FL and it was sold out. Several folks in costume-one guy wore a high-quality TWOK-era uniform and there was a hot chick with Vulcan ears and a TOS-era blue skirt. The crowd loved it. Laughter and applause was frequent; the loudest applause came when Leonard Nimoy first appeared onscreen. Most people stayed until the credits ended, and on the way out we could see that there was already a long line for the 9:30 showing. I wanted to mess with them by loudly exclaiming "Man, I can't believe they made Kirk and Spock gay!" or "I wish they hadn't put Wesley Crusher in the movie!" but I decided to be nice.

I went to a 6:30PM sold out IMAX showing in Manchester UK. There was a superb atmosphere in there, and everyone gave the movie a cheer as the title cards ended. Lots of laughter- moments of spontaneous applause throughout. A real mixed crowd too, I had a cinema experience we just don't normally get over here and I loved it.
